The purpose of me posting this is a total shot in the dark, but I’m trying to see if anyone else on here might have hooped at playgrounds/parks around Houston in the mid-90s and had a similar experience as I did described below: I grew up in NW Houston (43rd/Antoine off 290) and graduated HS in ‘95. Around that time I used to hoop at Saxon Park and I was there shooting around by myself earlier in the afternoon than when the usual post-work crowd would show up. It was summertime and hot (not like now but still hot). This beat up whale of a car pulls up and out gets this seemingly middle-aged white guy in a full sweat suit and glasses. He was prob 5’11”-ish and had terrible B.O. Anyways, I wasn’t great but I could hold my own and wasn’t an embarrassment on the court by any means. This guy asked if I wanted to play 1-1 and I said yes thinking “this is going to be a waste of time”. I don’t remember many details of the game itself EXCEPT that this guy beat me… and it was with a series of 3-pt distance sky hooks!!! It was the most annoying and kind of one of the most amazing things I’ve experienced on a basketball court. We played one game and he then got back in his whale of a car and drove off. I never saw him again at Saxon Park but feel like this guy had to have done that to other people around Houston because that hook shot had to have been shot a million times. I think it would be hilarious and awesome if there was anyone else on this forum who had a similar experience OR who might even know the guy I’m talking about! Fingers crossed.
Sounds like Tilman, not sure what his last name is? But we use to call him the happy hooker. The B.O. was actually from a restaurant he worked at during he day. (just kidding.....totally made up)
Yeah it took me a second to understand that your post was actually referencing what I was trying to reference. I guess I had to be there
Can't help you with the sky hook dude but my grandparents lived over in the area off of TC Jester and we used to hoop at a different park but same general area. It was off of Judiway (near 34th and Rosslyn...). A little half-court slab of concrete. A lot of the old houses in the area have been torn down with new construction in their place, but that little court is still there. Nostalgia is a real thing lol
I don't know his real name, but everyone called him Uncle Drew. Always doing weird feats to embarrass any young blood who got cocky on the court with him. Once crossed someone over 5 straight times with behind the back crossovers using only his left hand then finished with left-handed 360 layup from 3. Best trash talker ever.
..................(Rare Footage 1997') You had a rare encounter with the Saxon Park Phantom! A highly skilled assassin that would kill his opponents on the court, or sometimes literally kill his opponents off the court if he became sexually aroused by them! Consider yourself lucky to be alive.... Go Rockets!!! ....... ....... .......
I graduated HS the same year and was hooping around various places at the same time, but further out than you were. I was in Spring/Tomball area.
