I understand playing it careful with France who is approaching career highs in innings pitched. Unless the Yankees are throwing a lefty, Diaz should be in there today at either DH, 1B or C since Yordan is playing in the field regardless.
I just don’t buy into the lefty argument for Diaz. Not saying he hasn’t had a rough year against it, but if Dusty is strictly going by the numbers there, why should Maldy ever get a start against RHP other than to spell Diaz a game or so rest?
Lefty struggles goes back further than this year... but its not an end-all/be-all. That being said, its going to need to get better once he becomes the full time guy or the next manager will do the same thing.
But that’s my point. I’m not trying to deny his struggles against lefties or his need to improve there. But -if- that’s the reasoning behind him not playing against LHP, what’s the reasoning behind him not starting every game against RHP besides the rare spell by Maldy?
The same reasoning its always been? I have no doubt that Framber won't pitch to anybody else... and Javier is a mess in too many ways to count right now. JV is going to throw to he wants to. Luckily Hunter and JP have allowed for both. I don't expect anything drastic to change at the established catcher assignments. I'm more upset when Diaz doesn't DH (especially when Yordan is playing the field) or get more time at 1B (especially when Abreu was already slated to be off).
Information-only post, Yainer vs LHP: 2021: ??: .250 .297 .283 .580 (64PA)* 2022 CC: .278 .385 .352 .737 (64PA) 2022 SL: .220 .278 .280 .558 (53PA) *All PAs are approximate (just AB+BB) '21 stats are possibly incomplete, he played for 3 different A-ball teams, and these are stats from 1 or 2 or 3 of them, MiLB won't tell me which eta: here ya go @travfrancis
Because they consider Maldy their starting catcher and Diaz the backup catcher. They don't pick their catchers based on hitting abilities. Whether anyone agrees with the strategy, it seems like this should be pretty obvious after the last several years plus 100+ games this year.
This was a Brown call the second they got JV and got word Urquidy would be back. They're going to be careful with France's innings load. As they should also with Brown. Now they really should have been cautious previously with Javier but cats already out of the bag there....
All above stats while not impressive and not much of a sample size are still 50 basis points higher than Maldy.
Pathetic to use the lefty excuse. Absolutely pathetic. Maldy hits .220 against lefties and .170 against the league. Maldy runs like a 83 year old man. Diaz is better defensively.
So Diaz is officially playing less than half the time since Yordan came back. All while our offense struggles. As for being poor against lefties, his expected numbers are all great he's just hit into poor luck (just like early in the season when he had an overall small sample). I guarantee if Dusty liked Diaz, he wouldn't bench a player on based reverse splits with such a small sample, but he doesn't. I will not miss this f**ker.
