I'm very old school with the terminology of Defense. In fact, I learned essentially a mirror defense where every offensive player was defended by a defensive player covering them. Thus C was covered by a Nose Tackle, Guards were covered by Defensive Guards, Tackles were covered by Defensive Tackles, Receivers were covered by CBs, and RBs and QBs were covered by LB and Safeties.

I know the terminology has changed and would like to know how to label the plethora of DBs we have by their modern position terminology.

This is where I start. Fill in the updates.

    CB
    _____OLB
    DT____________S
    DG
    _____MLB
    DG
    DT____________S
    _____OLB
    CB

Are you asking what type of defense Demeco runs?

    Term: "Swarm"

    Used in a shimmy sentence:
Wu tang killa bees on a swarm.

Both of their DTs get doubleteamed on every play, do we have the people to make that happen?

As much as i liked this, just tell me what each position is called now. It sort of looks like 4 LBs, though one could be a hybrid CB. Two safeties and a CB. But even the basic interior linemen seem to have new names. Edge seems foreign with almost any position capable of achieving that term.

This is our list of Defensive Players. Which ones are properly or improperly labeled at the position and which can be more specific than DB or DL?

    23-3 ED(LB) Will Anderson Jr
    16-12 DL Sheldon Rankins
    10-31 DL Jerry Hughes
    16-67 DL Maleik Collins
    19-77 DL Chase Winovich
    17-83 DL Derek Rivers
    20-90 DL Jonathan Greenard
    23-109 ED(DE) Dylan Horton
    16-116 DL Hassan Ridgeway
    22-150 DT Thomas Booker IV
    21-195 DT Roy Lopez
    23-UDFA HOU ED(DE) Ali Gaye
    23-UDFA HOU DL Charles Looes
    22-UDFA DL Kurt Hinish
    18-UDFA DL Demone Harris
    18-UDFA DL Taylor Stallworth
    22-PS DL Adedayo Odeleye
    15-48 LB Denzel Perryman
    14-71 LB Christian Kirksey
    22-75 ILB Christian Harris
    19-157 LB Blake Cashman
    23-167 HOU LB Henry To'oTo'o
    21-170 LB Garret Wallow
    22-UDFA LB Jake Hansen
    16-UDFA LB Cory Littleton
    22-3 ED(CB) Derek Stingley, Jr
    22-37 CB Jalem Pitre
    14-30 DB Jimmy Ward
    18-53 DB M J Stewart
    15-98 DB Steven Nelson
    16-106 DB Eric Murray
    19-111 DB Kendall Sheffield
    17-151 DB Desmond King II
    19-185 DB Ka'dar Hollman
    23-248 HOU S Brandon Hill
    23-UDFA HOU DB Darius Joiner
    22-UDFA DB Jacobi Francis
    20 UDFA DB Grayland Arnold
    19-UDFA DB D'Angelo Ross
    18-UDFA DB Tavierre Thomas

    Ah I gotcha.

This is just my thought and I’d love if someone could correct me if I’m wrong. I want to break it down as best as possible. Demeco’s defense is described as a Base 4-3 but is actually run as a 4-2-5 (sometimes called nickel).

He’ll use two Defensive Ends (normally lined up outside of the Offensive Tackles and/or Tight Ends) with two Defensive Tackles (inside the Offensive Tackles). I think you’re wondering if Will Anderson will be labeled a Defensive End or Outside Linebacker. If I’m right, he’ll be considered a Defensive End. Sometimes he’ll have his hand down, others, he’s standing.

You’ll see three linebackers. Mike (Middle), Sam (strong) and Will (Weakside). The Mike and Sam will likely be Christian Kirksey and Denzel Perryman with Christian Harris as the Will Linebacker. Jimmie was sometimes used as a hybrid since he’s good a covering TEs (or slot WRs) and a good tackler at the LOS. With Jimmie as the hybrid, this is how a Base 4-3 can be disguised as a 4-2-5. Whether he’s playing DB or linebacker describes the defense.

This is a Base 4-3 Defense

To disguise this as a Base 4-2-5, you would sub a LB for a DB. This DB would be considered a Hybrid since he tackles like a LB but covers like a DB.
