https://apnews.com/article/fact-check-florida-law-education-veterans-military-degree-645106455513 “A new program in Florida aims to make up for a shortage in teachers (wonder what could possibly be causing that in Florida?) by issuing temporary teaching certificates to allow military veterans and their spouses to teach in schools,” said an Instagram post circulating on Wednesday, with a video of DeSantis discussing the new policy. According to Natalie Brown, a legislative aide for Republican state Sen. Danny Burgess, only military veterans are eligible for the teaching certificates. Cassandra Palelis, a Florida department of education spokesperson, also confirmed that spouses and family members of veterans do not qualify for the program. Veterans must also have at least some college credits to obtain a temporary certificate, and would need to complete their bachelor’s degree within five years to obtain a permanent teaching certificate. Temporary certificates can’t be renewed once they expire, according to Florida’s education department. The program was designed to address a teacher shortage in the state, Brown said. However, to receive the certification, veterans must meet additional requirements, and Brown noted that it is a selective process. To be eligible for the program, veterans must have completed a minimum of 48 months of active military service with an honorable or medical discharge, according to the state education department website. In addition, they must have a minimum of 60 college credits with a 2.5 grade point average, pass a subject matter exam, clear a background screening and meet other criteria. Once accepted, the law states that the veteran must be assigned a teaching mentor chosen by the school district they are working in for a minimum of two years. ----------- I don't really see much wrong with that. I'll admit that it would of course be my preference for my children to be taught by a better-trained teacher, but they are in a private school anyway. I would assume that having a teacher who went through background checks and that program is better than having no teacher.
I always find this interesting. The trope of the Priest or Boy Scout leader molesting children. No doubt it has happened and will continue to happen because of the sheer size of the organizations. I have both represented the Catholic Church and I have represented victims of molestation by a Priest. In the course of these cases, I had to really delve into this topic and retain experts. First, the rates of molestation by Priests are lower than other religious leaders AND it is lower than the rate of molestation by lay males in society. This is also true for Boy Scout leaders…. So that is to say that a child is more likely to be molested by a man that isn’t a Priest or Boy Scout leader, than someone that is a Priest or Boy Scout leader. Also, children are the most at risk to be molested by a family member or family friend. This holds true for sexual assault of adults, murder of women, pregnant women, children etc. All of this discussion of drag shows, transsexuals, Priests… etc. when the likely threats are far closer to the kids.
Did I miss something where dangerous, untrustworthy, or otherwise unqualified people are being given authority over and private time with children by schools?
According to this Genius German Attorney CEO, yes. Dude watched too much German fetish p*rn as a teenager and is trying to inject his neuroses here. Maybe he should lie down on the couch and tell us about his mother.
Whenever someone is put in a position of trust and power with children, there is potential for abuse. We see this with teachers, babysitters, family members, gymnastic physicians, and yes priests and boy scout leaders. Yet somehow, the idea of a transgender person reading a book to a group of children while being supervised is what people worry about.
I don't think I did. I knew full well you were suspecting/applying nefarious intent to these people. I was simply making a joke that corresponded to the other side of that coin (the idea that people actually enjoy spending time around kids for altruistic/positive reasons... so profound apparently). Your posting feels very much rooted in moral panic or some type of paranoid witch hunt. It's truly odd how much of a crusade you seem to be on with this. It's not enough for you to just not participate, but you seem to want to vilify anyone queer who is around children at all. You can say you think X or Y is inappropriate for children, and you're well within your right to do that and not participate, but ascribing some type of pathology or fetish to it does feel fairly prejudiced and probably says more about you than it does them.
Drag queens don’t have powerful organizations to sweep abuse under the rug. We truly don’t know the extent of what the Catholic Church or Mormon Church or Southern Baptist have done. We all know what conservatives, especially the religious right, is doing with all this “groomer” and “pedo” talk.
So did the term "crossdresser" just magically disappear one day? Because that is exactly what all of these nutcases are.
