How about Chafin instead of Rogers?

    Well said.

I’m still miffed at letting Vazquez walk. There’s zero reason Maldonado should be getting more than 1/3 the playing time when you have someone like Vazquez on the roster. Sure he isn’t Contreras but he’s a significant offensive upgrade. Given our alternatives 3/$30m seemed like great value.

    Oh well.

I’m thinking that too. I remember him playing 2b and having issues on pop up’s.

Vasquez while he did well here, that’s 10 million for a backup. Also, you don’t necessarily pay Maldy to hit when you have an entire lineup you pay to do that. Maldy is being paid for his work behind the plate.

Vasquez wanted to start not backup. Not surprised he didn’t come back. Maldy is #1.

Maldy’s work behind the plate is below average.

May have missed it in a previous post but is there an offer out to Rogers? He would be a fantastic cherry on top for the pen

Is that why he throws out so many runners?

The Astros' top pitchers last year who insisted on throwing to him seemed to disagree.

I am very interested to see what happens with Gurriel. There is no reasonable place for him on Houston's roster and it is hard to see him taking a minor league deal at his age and having made $70M+ over his career. But it's also hard to see any other team offering him a big league contract with his defensive limitations, age, and offensive trajectory.

Yuli is one year removed from winning a batting title, had a great postseason run, and has tremendous postseason experience in his career. For the right price, many teams could benefit by adding him.

Maldonado has a zSB rating of 2. Basically prevented 2 runs from scoring with his arm.

I like Rogers a lot more although Chafin would likely be cheaper and was very effective last season.

Agnostic is an interesting way to describe it.
I think we needed to bolster pitching. Maybe we are not done.

As things are, in a nutshell, our pitching got worse and our hitting got better.

The rest of your post I like very much. Some folks equate big spending to mean they are all in, and if you don't, your not.
To me that is overly simplistic.
All in isn't going to last very long if your spending unwisely.

Ah yes, the mythical "everything I don't agree with was Dusty's fault" approach.

I suspect that the Astros were in an either-or situation with Brantley and Conforto. The Astros wanted Conforto but on their own terms. Conforto would not budge on his second year player option, so I guess that the Astros withdrew Conforto’s offer and surprisingly discover that Brantley has made a full recovery.
