We need to get TheFreak to post in this thread - he is the guy that has and knows all the hard rock and heavy metal bands. I remember when first told him that I was going to get into Motorhead and his quote was, "Whoa, they're a little to heavy for you, Manny." Bowie was a huge influence on the club bands but don't forget how influential Roxy Music was as well.
I don't know how much support there would be for an Old School Glam Rock thread. A thread for Old School Metal with maybe a bit of Hair Metal thrown in? That might be viable. Maybe we continue with things in this thread or eventually a new thread gets started. Monitor what happens and decide accordingly.
I would be down for a glam rock thread. Slade and Sweet have been mentioned as has Bowie and Roxy Music but don't forget about Mott the Hoople, early Queen, Mud, and of course, Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex.
Not really - early Genesis, especially with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett were progressive rock monsters. Think Yes, King Crimson, and ELP and they would fit right in with those other 3.
I must be in the same category as Mango, as I 've not heard of many of these club bands (other than Ministry), so me and Mango gonna go listen to Bob...
Do you have a cutoff point in time for other genres such as metal, hair metal, grunge etc or is it only for the Club type of groups that you are foggy with?
When corporate/yacht rock moved in I was depressed but my immersion in "current" music died with Kurt. I worked at a record store/head shop all through college and beyond from '78-'86, so that is my sweet spot, but that '65-'75 classic years of rock are my foundation.
I think the confusion over metal bands and someone like Ministry stems from the fact that Industrial music has many off-shoots - the most popular being synth pop which included early Ministry, Front 242, early NIN, early KMFDM, Front Line Assembly, Nitzer Ebb, Einsturzende Neubaten (sp?), DAF, Skinny Puppy, etc. Sometimes this type of industrial music is known as EBM or Electronic Body Music. Another popular subgenre of industrial music is industrial metal which included Ministry (starting with their 3rd album), NIN (starting with the Broken EP), Marilyn Manson, Fear Factory, Godflesh, Strapping Young Lad, Filter, Stabbing Westward, etc. So you need to ask if this group leans more to the EBM side of industrial or the metal side.
That time period ('65-'75) covers much of what Deckard likes and probably some of what rimrocker likes as well. Bobrek seems to prefer sparring with Roscoe instead of hanging around the music threads. Since you are here, anything to say/share about Slade Sweet Genesis Bowie etc Quiet Riot Slayer Megadeth Metallica Motorhead etc Ratt Poison Twisted Sister *Motley Crue etc Grunge?
I tried and what you named didn't grab me. The hair metal and some of the metal groups I can go with. They aren't as removed from the older stuff that I know. The industrial stuff comes across as too different for me.
I took the alternative/prog/CBGB/Americana stoner branch rather than the metal or hair bands. FZ, Bowie, Crimson, Lou, Television, NY Dolls, Patti Smith, Dead, Neil, Bob, etc. Loved Sabbath and Zep but of those above, the first grouping loved 'em all. I liked Quiet Riot, Motorhead, and Metallica. Didn't care for the latter group. Edit: though I have to admit, when re-listening to some bands I was too pretentious to appreciate in my younger day, after 30+ years I can appreciate them more now than then...
I like a lot of music. Heavy metal is down the list although I give ACDC all the credit for me breaking the 2 hour barrier on my 4th half marathon. Always listen to Dylan. Like his stuff a lot. Hate his Sinatra crap. I think Jackson Browne is lyrically the best writer of the past 40+ years. Eminem is a genius (then again so is Weird Al).
