    ---------------------------------
These were endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles and, because there is no record of them ever nesting on the Upper Texas Coast, their visit was heralded as another sign the species is clawing its way back from the brink of extinction.

    That's a good thing.

There's a sea turtle barn down in Galveston. They've been raising and releasing sea turtles into the wild for years now, hoping to increase the numbers. The summer camp class that I taught at the Houston Museum of Natural Science took our class their every week.

Perhaps some of their work has been paying off. :)

    Bigly turtle news

Kemp’s Ridley has laid eggs on Galveston beach.

World's rarest sea turtle lays eggs on new Galveston beach
The nesting was reportedly made possible through a beach 'renourishment' project that began in 2015.

Staff from Texas A&M's Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research uncover a clutch of eggs laid by a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle—the world’s rarest and most endangered sea turtle species—on a new beach near the corner of Seawall and 86th Street.

very cool. As a kid I would spend summers in the Ozarks and my grand father would grab a turtle he would see crossing the road and bring them home to me. He would drill a small hole in the back lip of their shell and I would use a string to one of my big Tonka trucks and have them pull it around. At the end of summer I would put my name and address on their shell before releasing them. Simpler times.

Nah, would be a different new turtle every summer. I was hoping someone would write and tell me where they found the turtles, maybe gain a pen pal as we wrote letters to kids across the world in 5th grade and even got a few responses from girl in Italy. She never did send any pictures.
