1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - Kubrick is the GOAT
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - Welles' body of work stands up better over time, IMO
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - Sorry, Alfonso. You just aren't there yet.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - Of this pairing, the Coen's just destroy their opposition.

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - I don't think Howard is that great of a director and probably shouldn't have made it out of the first round. His stuff is serviceable but ultimately is a little flat and formulaic. Spielberg is a genius, on the other hand.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - Fincher has some all time greats like Seven and Fight Club but he's just outclassed and outgunned by Eastwood's quality and quantity.
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - This is a tough one because both have a fairly sparse resume compared to some of the other directors in this tournament. I think I'm going to look at how the careers progressed. Cameron kept pumping out amazing films, Burton is just sort of paying the bills with adaptations. Slight edge to Cameron.
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - Unfortunately for Capra, most of his films have just aged out of relevancy. Tarantino wins by default.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - Probably an unpopular vote but Hitchcock gets it based on the longevity of his body of work. Will Anderson's films be popular 80 years after they were made? He's got a while to go.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - John Ford, not even close. Bigelow makes great entertaining movies but Ford is a giant of film.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - A couple of lightweights here, very few movie works between them relative to some of the other folks on this list. Mr. Mann has made more films I enjoy, so I'm going with him.
    7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - LOL

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - As much as I love Carpenter, Scorsese is a better overall director. Carpenter is seeded too low, IMO, but it won't matter in the end anyway.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma- not really fair because I'm not familiar with Almodovar's works at all and DePalma is amazing anyway. I did not vote for Pedro.
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - Couple of stinkers here. I guess I'll vote Forman because I don't think Brooks is a fantastic director, even though his movies are funny
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan- Going to give the slight edge here to Nolan for overall quality. Del Toro makes some good movies, but he makes some mediocre movies too. I don't think I can say that about Nolan. Let's see where they are in 20 years.

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - one of the best ever. I expect a blowout here
    5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - I don't have a very strong opinion here
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - Nooooo. Toughest one yet. I love Cuaron so so much. But Ridley has done so much more that he has to get my vote. But if Cuaron continues his trend he will eventually surpass Scott.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - John Hughes movies are fun, but it will be a travesty if the Coen Brothers get upset here.

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - Kind of surprised at myself, but I rewatch Ron Howard movies way more often than I do Spielberg.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - Fincher is outstanding. Plus he's never sung over his own credits.
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - Tough matchup here. But T2 and Aliens are better than anything Burton has done (though I think Big Fish is criminally underrated).
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - I was surprised by how many people didn't vote for Tarantino in round 1. I think he is one of the best around.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - Probably not a very cinema historian vote, but I love Wes Anderson's schtick and never get tired of it. Hitchcock was iconic and influential but I've never rewatched any of his movies.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - Really haven't seen much of John Ford's movies. But Bigelow is worthy to move on regardless.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - Mann has more good movies, but Inarritu has the overall best movie (Birdman), so he edges it out here.
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - Didn't vote for him in round one, but I'll vote for Coppola over Stone here. I'm not as enamored with the Godfather movies as most but I do recognize they are great.

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - Easy win. Not a horror fan.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma - Blah matchup. I'm not a big DePalma fan but haven't seen anything by Almodovar.
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - I love Mel Brooks but voted against him in round 1. But he definitely deserves to win in this matchup.
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan - Can't believe GDT made it to this round. Aronofsky against Nolan would have been a MUCH harder vote. I like GDT but his stuff is mostly fun popcorn movies and then Pan's Labyrinth. Nolan's stuff has much more depth.

    Winners are in bold

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - As Xero said, Kubrick is simply the GOAT.
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - this might surprise some but I find myself more wanting to watch a Lumet film over one by Welles.
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - to me this is no contest.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - I like John Hughes but he can't compete with the Coen Bros.

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - Spielberg is too strong for Ron Howard to give him any competition here.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - primarily based off Seven alone
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - I really wanted to vote for Burton here but I think he has gotten lazy in his recent stuff so I am going to go with Cameron instead.
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - I am not the biggest fan of QT but he gets the nod here.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - I can appreciate Wes Anderson and his films but he can't compete with Hitchcock.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - I know that Ford has the greater resume but I have to vote for Bigelow simply because of Point Break.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - I have seen more Mann movies than his opponent.
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - No contest here.

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - I really like Carpenter but this is another no contest here.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma - I have seen more DePalma movies.
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - interesting matchup but I am going with Milos because of Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan - Nolan is one of my favorite directors - pretty much any movie he does is a must-see, IMO.

    winners bolded

    1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming--not close
    5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles--close
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott-- not close
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers--surprisingly close given the seedings, love both, have to go with the Coen Bros though

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard--not close but I think Howard is underrated
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher--first case of simply personal preference for me
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron--first tough choice for me, I have a soft spot for Burton
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino--extremely tough choice here, gotta go with Tarantino again personal preference more than a quality judgment

    1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson--not close
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford--how is this one even a choice? lol
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola--another tough one for me personally, Stone loses here more than Coppola wins. Stone is formulaic

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter--not close. Scorsese may win it all
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma--really tough choice here. by the thinnest of margins I'll give it to DePalma
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks--I second guessed myself on this one and went back and changed my vote
    10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan--not close

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - Not close. As others have mentioned, Kubrick is the GOAT.
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - This is very close, I think both directors have made great movies. Tough choice.
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - Really close again. My first thought was to give this one to Cuaron but Ridley Scott has made a lot more great movies (and a lot more crappy movies, let's be honest), which is why I would give him the edge. I think if Cuaron stays consistent and makes more great movies he would get my vote in a few years.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - Not even close

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - I don't think Ron Howard is that good a director, so no hesitation here.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - Yikes, that's a close one. I think I have to give the slight edge to Clint here. But I think Fincher should have gone to the 3rd round, considering some of the other choices that will go on.
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - I base my choice on the body of work of Burton pre-2005ish. I also think Cameron is very overrated (but Terminator 2 is the GOAT action movie along with Die Hard). I honestly don't think either should get to the 3rd round so I'll most likely vote against whoever comes out of this in the next round.
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - Love QT, easy choice for me, but I think Frank Capra is a great director,

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - No contest here. Hitchcock is number 1 seed for a reason.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - I feel bad for voting against her again, but I just don't think Bigelow's work can come anywhere close to John Ford's.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - That's a tough one. Neither of them have made a lot of movies, but I would be a lot more interested in watching a new movie from Inarritu than Mann.
    7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - LOL

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - No contest here.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma - Similar to the Tim Burton / James Cameron one, I don't think either should get to the 3rd round. I voted Almodovar but by default.
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - Easy choice here.
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan - Another easy choice. I really enjoy Del Toro's movies, and I couldn't understand/hear half of what was going on in Tenet, but Nolan easily takes this.

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming-- Kubrick in an easy win

5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles-- Sidney Lumet

11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott-- Ridley Scott

10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers-- The last three Coen movies have been very meh to me, but I find it hard to live without Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Coen Brothers

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard-- Steven Spielberg

5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher-- This is a very tough mathc up but Clint with the edge because of quality and quantity as was already mentioned

6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron-- James Cameron easy, would have been a tougher decision against Spike

7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino-- Tarantino for sure

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson-- Wes Anderson, although it is an interesting proposition if his films will be relevant in 60/80 years

5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford-- Kathryn Bigelow, easy decision for me

6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu-- Michael Mann, Heat and Collateral are a couple of my favorite movies

7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola-- I would take Platoon over Apocalypse Now, but I'll take Francis over Oliver here

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter-- Martin Scorsese

5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma-- Brian De Palma, Snake Eyes is always rewatchable to me

11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks-- Mel Brooks

10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan-- Christopher Nolan, Disney needs to get him to do a Star Wars movie so I can be a fan again

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - Kubrick can captivate and bore me at the same time. And I'm just not familiar enough with Fleming.
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - Tough one for me as I'm not a big fan of either.
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - Cuaron has some great films under his belt, but Scott is the more complete filmmaker.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - There's something to like in even the Coen Bro's worst films.

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13 & Cocoon are all great, but they don't quite stack up to Spielberg's best.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - Eastwood has fallen off bigtime in recent years, but I still have a soft spot for his talents.
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - Burton's a legend, but his imagination gets in the way of his stories at times.
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - Tarantino writes twisted characters as good or better than anyone. But people like Robert Richardson make him shine.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - I love Wes Anderson. But Hitchcock is one of the masters.
    5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - No contest.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - The risks Inarritu took in filming The Revenant & Birdman gave him a very slight edge.
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - Stone's tackled more subjects.

    1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - No contest.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma - I thought I cancelled that Pedro guy already?
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - Brooks doesn't get eough credit. No, he's not at the same level as some in this contest, but his movies are great fun.
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan - Nolan has taken on more challenges with his pictures and GDT has yet to make his Dark Knight Rises. I believe he will get there someday though.

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming - I voted against Victor Fleming in the last round so this is a pretty easy choice for me. Even if it was DeMille I would still give it to Kubrick.
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles - As I said in the last round Welles influence is very great.
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott - I like Cuaron a lot but Scott is one of the masters.
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers - This is a tough one as I said in the last round that the Hughes has a large influence on my generation. The Coen Brothers are influential too and better auteurs.

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard - Ron Howard is a fine director but his body of work doesn't compare to Spielberg.
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher - This is a tough one. David Fincher is great stylistically but the body of work from Eastwood is too good.
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron - I didn't vote for Burton last time but this is also a tough one. Again the hit parade of Cameron's is hard to argue against.
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino - I voted against Tarantino last time out of personal dislike but this time I honestly think Capra is the better director and while his movies are old they still carry a lot of influence. It's a Wonderful Life is a Christmas tradition and one that has been referenced many times. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a great political movie that reflects our hopes about politics rather than most political movies our cynicism.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson - Even though he's from Houston, cast Bill Murray and has some great Kinks' songs in his movies this isn't close. Just the term "Hitchcock" already tells you about what a movie is like.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford - Age isn't helping John Ford but his name was synonymous with Westerns. Also when Orson Welles and Ingmar Bregman call you the best director that is pretty tall praise.
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu - A very tough one giving it to Mann narrowly.
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola - Oliver Stone has done some pretty influential work but Coppola's body of work stands for itself. The Godfather alone could beat out many of the complete works of some of the directors on this list.

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter - It's almost unfair for Carpenter to have to face Scorcese in the second round.
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma - This is a tough one since I didn't vote for either in the last round. I'm going to give it to DePalma narrowly.
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks - This one I still have to give for Mel Brooks as both one of the funniest men alive but also his ability to draw out such hilarity from his actors.
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan - Another tough one but I think the success of Nolan with how he's changed storytelling gives him the edge.

1 - Stanley Kubrick vs. 9 - Victor Fleming (no contest)
5 - Sidney Lumet vs. 4 - Orson Welles (12 angry men is an all timer, but nothing else close to that level)
11 - Alfonso Cuaron vs. 3 - Ridley Scott (no contest)
10 - John Hughes vs. 2 - Coen Brothers (no contest)

1 - Steven Spielberg vs. 9 - Ron Howard (Howard has some really great movies, but in many ways he's just lesser speilberg)
5 - Clint Eastwood vs. 4 - David Fincher (finchers highs aren't high enough to overcome eastwoods volume)
6 - Tim Burton vs. 3 - James Cameron (the GOAT, stopped making regular movies because it was too easy)
7 - Frank Capra vs. 2 - Quentin Tarantino (Tarantino should be the GOAT, but he would rather make "his type of movie" Pulp Fiction in in my top 5 though)

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson (like the local boys work, but this opponent is too strong)
5 - Kathryn Bigelow vs. 4 - John Ford (him as a 4 seed is inexcusible, watch something made before the 80s' people)
6 - Michael Mann vs. 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu (not really a big fan of either, but Heat is awesome so he gets the nod)
7 - Oliver Stone vs. 2 - Francis Ford Coppola ( I actually don't think that highly of his work aside from GF 1 and 2, still enough here though)

1 - Martin Scorsese vs. 9 - John Carpenter (no contest)
5 - Pedro Almodovar vs. 4 - Brian DePalma (both grossly overseeded, really weak matchup)
11 - Milos Forman vs. 14 - Mel Brooks (too many comic masterpieces)
10 - Guillermo del Toro vs. 2 - Christopher Nolan (best in the world right now)

1 - Stanley Kubrick over 9 - Victor Fleming -- Kubrick will be crushing fools for a while, methinks. I even liked Eyes Wide Shut -- that's how far gone I am on this.
5 - Sidney Lumet loses on last-second shot to 4 - Orson Welles. Ugh, this one was probably the hardest one for me, b/c I love Dog Day Afternoon (Lumet) and several Welles films, and then Welles never stayed in his lane so the situation gets extra confusing. But ultimately, Lumet looked like a perve and was from a very pervy era in Hollywood.
11 - Alfonso Cuaron loses badly to 3 - Ridley Scott. You have to bring a big resume to come up against Scott. Cuaron's Children of Men is incredibly underrated (as well as prescient, given plummeting fertility rates for our species), but Gravity was grossly overrated, and then he has a Harry Potter film? Ick. 20 point loss.
10 - John Hughes fails to score in the first half versus 2 - Coen Brothers . Not sure it will get to 1 vs 2 but that would be really hard for me. I'm a Coen apologist, even though their last 8 or so (?) movies have shown some serious wear and tear.

1 - Steven Spielberg wins a polite game versus 9 - Ron Howard
5 - Clint Eastwood loses a poorly attended game to 4 - David Fincher. I'm not a huge Fincher fan, but Eastwood is sentimental and overrated.
6 - Tim Burton, he of a gimmick run-n-gun offense, loses plucky effort to 3 - James Cameron. Burton feels like a prisoner of a single era -- let's see how his films age, but it's not looking good.
7 - Frank Capra crushes overconfident, trash-talking Quentin Tarantino, who commits two flagrant fouls and gets ejected. I really want someone from Capra's era to advance, and when you look at this filmography -- wow -- it has to be him. Not only the # of influential and high-quality films but the range.

1 - Alfred Hitchcock vs. 8 - Wes Anderson. I think Wes would agree.
5 - Kathryn Bigelow wins a stunner over 4 - John Ford, who was prepping for Hitchcock. Enough said. Let's mix things up despite my earlier comments about history. Haha.
6 - Michael Mann loses late to swarming defense of 3 - Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu. Alejandro should advance to the sweet 16 just on the merit of torturing Leonardo in sub-zero weather, but seriously having already directed Birdman and the underrated 21 grams, to say nothing of Biutiful and Amores Perros? Damn.
7 - Oliver Stone commits 30 turnovers and 40 fouls in crushing loss to 2 - Francis Ford Coppola. Ugh, still can't believe Stone survived the first round.

1 - Martin Scorsese wins nail-biter versus gritty 9 - John Carpenter. Am a Scorsese apologist through and through, but this was still tough.
5 - Pedro Almodovar gets to the lane for a series of tea-bagging dunks over humiliated 4 - Brian DePalma. Seriously, you could call Almodovar a little repetitive in tone and subject matter, but the filmography is incredible. I'm really looking forward to the new one as well.
11 - Milos Forman takes 14 - Mel Brooks too lightly, succumbs to fart jokes. We need a wise-cracking Cinderella in this tourney -- Mel's the man. Rewatch Young Frankenstein and tell me I'm wrong. Besides, who is Milos Forman?
10 - Guillermo del Toro uses huge, 5-center lineup to overwhelm overly intricate offensive sets of 2 - Christopher Nolan. I have been in Nolan's camp a long time, but Tenet broke me somehow. I went back to look at Memento, which disappoints, and then remember how Dunkirk and Inception totally disappointed me. This is probably just more of a bitter vote than an honest vote, because Insomnia and The Prestige alone are probably better than any of del Toro's work (which I also like, especially because he'll let himself be goofy).
