The difference between then and now is an aging and declining CP3 with his $160M contract. We didnt have that anchor tying us down previously.
If you look at things in this way, the price is not bad. You got half of the banana boat for only $42 million a year, not bad. Paul may be the reason Melo is here. And Melo could sign 4-year Vet Min Contract here. Isn't that wonderful?

Tank for Zion Williamson. Butler gone, Hood is stinking it up in Cleveland and Bazemore doesn’t move the needle. Zion will be MJ good for 10 yrs at SF/PF. Finally Rockets land a star SF/PF......on a rookie contract at that. Take a chance.
I think since we were willing to offer 4 first round picks for Butler, and we lost out on him, Morey must have more magic up his sleeve for another star sometime later.
Only way to recover from this in order to compete with gsw this year is to hope A.D requests a trade to Houston. Is give up Clint and 4 1st round picks for him. Other than that then we should basically do what boat in is doing. And that's prep for when gsw might break up next year due to $$$.
Hate the thought of tanking. The reason I chose to follow this organisation considering I'm from the other side of the world (apart from my love of Hakeem and Harden) was that we always tried to compete when we could. If we're talking trade targets would the Celtics bite on a Gordon/Clint trade for Jaylen/Hordford. Celtics have a bit of a log jam with Haywood, Brown and Tatum, they could could use a friendly 'star' contract in Capella. I've always liked Horford and Jaylen could fill that void that we were hoping to fill with Butler with a TONN of room to grow.
I think AD would fit well with our team. We lack AD's skills on our team. A talented big man who can create for himself and dominate inside on any given night, who also has a lethal jumper.
AD (with James) would be a nightmare match up for every team in the league, pick & roll, lobs, pick & pop, maximum spacing on offense with that kind of center, the problem is we just don't have the assets to trade for him...the best package we could offer is the famous 4 picks and Capela, maybe another asset made by moving Gordon...still, depends of what other teams like Celtics and Lakers will be willing to move, they just have more and better assets overall.
Agrede This season is over. Keep Harden (and rest him) and Capela. Pray for a healty CP3 next year. Trade Gordon for a good young player. Keep the pick and draft the more ready to contribute player. Use Knigth expiring contact next year to trade for a good player with a bad contract.
