Exactly! Remember a lot of people's reaction on this board back in 09 when we traded for Kyle Lowry after trading away Rafer Alston??? MCW has been a wild disappointment yes. However, he was signed for min. and despite what he has shown thus far, he is talented and still very young. Maybe the Rockets will turn out to be the right environment and system to where he can be a rotation guy for 10 to 15 mpg. D'Antoni has a record of turning very good pg's into Elite ones. Wishful thinking here, but maybe he can turn talented young scrubs into passable role players. And If he can't, at least MCW is cheap and can be moved fairly easily...
Anyone have stats on if he can hit corner threes? If so, he might have been brought in to play some backup wing
About 29% for his career, but hasn't really gotten that many attempts on a regular basis because he's usually been the primary ball handler when on the court (without seeing much of him last couple of years). That being said, he only has 1.2mm guaranteed this season...if it doesn't pan out we can easily waive him and sign a 2nd-tier buyout player for minimum (assuming we sign a tier 1 buyout w/MLE)
Apparently the Rockets brain trust see something or he fills a need on the team, so my answer is yes. Do we always hit, no but enough to Trust in Morey.
Remember MCW played in philly when Mike D was an assistant there and was very fond of him...... I love the move and actually predicted it. I also think he’s gonna be better than most think.... Did anyone not notice how tired James and chris would be at the end of tough games where we had iso heavy to finish games????? Well this guy along with Melton maybe should help....
This. Having an oversized guard who can hopefully fit well into our switching defense is worth the small price.
The one thing about MCW is that he isn't actually that young, he was an older rookie, so he'll be 27 before the start of next season, he's supposed to be in his prime. Most rookies now are starting in the NBA at 19 years old, so at this same stage are 23-24 years old, but he started at 22. Kyle Lowry was 5 years younger than MCW will be next season when the Rockets got him. Lowry from his first seasons with Memphis had a 53.8 TS% / 108 Ortg. Carter Williams so far has had a 47.1 TS% / 98 Ortg with 2 more seasons of NBA experience and 5 more years of playing basketball, so the comparison isn't great. I wouldn't necessarily say D'Antoni has turned very good PG's into elite ones, he just maximizes a PG's usage and gives them a freedom an spacng that tends to help them, but any elite PG he's had was already an elite player. Nash was already elite, Harden was already an elite player and of course Paul has been an elite PG for a decade before this. Raymond Felton for example played a ton of minutes and put up big stats, but he wasn't actually any more impactful as a player under D'Antoni, but he came from playing under a very stringent Larry Brown in a slow paced poor spacing system to a more free system with much better spacing. MCW is a partially guaranteed minimum contract player, so it's hard to really be displeased with those kinds of signings. It's a basically zero risk, hopeful decent reward move, if it works, it works, if not, nothing is really lost. Those are moves you have to make as a capped out team trying to find diamonds in the rough, you don't expect them to all work out, but you just need some to do so.
Isn’t obvious? We have the MVP, Coach of the year, manager of the year, sixth man of the year. We’re coming for that shaqtin a fool MVP. Step aside McGee it’s our year.
MCW is nothing more than Melton’s placeholder while he matures. Melton and MCW are in competition with each other for the same role. Melton’s development is a must for long term Rocket success with payroll being the way it is. We have used the RGV in the past to help develop our younger talent, but with Coach, CP3, Harden and EGo Melton would be better served on the bench earning playing time as the season progresses. What a dream situation to be in for a young player. In a vacuum Melton vs MCW most would take Melton long term but as of now they are basically tied and competing for the same role on the team. It’s not smart to ever trust a rookie and that is why MCW is here. -IF MCW can stay out of the way of Melton’s development than sure he is okay insurance at a great price. -IF he can’t than needs to be cut
it's funny cause everyone says golden state makes great moves now but I bet no one was cheering when they signed Livingston, or traded for Iggy (when no one else would) or acquired bogut.... or drafted Draymond in the 2nd.... what I'm saying is that sometimes the small moves add into big things.... and sometimes the sum is better than the individual parts....
