Maybe he mistakenly thought comments like that weren’t a big deal coming from him? SNL even joked about this — the idea that flirtatious behavior is perceived as just cute when coming from an old black guy:
It's obvious Morgan is just that entitled famous actor who thinks he can act in a lewd manner to and around women while getting away with it because of who he is. It's not okay but celebrity can and does go to one's head I'm sure...walking around being worshipped by fans having played God and the like. Must be a pretty good feeling but it also opens up the door for some over-the-top behavior to come out. His statement and apology rang hollow to me. I guess he may believe it to a degree because, when you do something like this for so long, it just becomes second nature. He probably didn't even realize how much of a pig he was being after a while. Sure.
Dude has been doing the same isht for 6 decades No one had complained before So How can you tell him it is wrong now? (Not saying it isn't wrong only that from his perspective. . . 6 decades of experience tells him it isn't) I doubt anything he did or said is new . . .. We are creatures of habit and we do what works for us . .. . . . Cannot argue with success. . . . . Rocket River
I'm dissapointed but not surprised. A lot of this sounds like the actions of an old man who hasn't adapted to changing times. That's not to excuse what he did as yes it does seem creepy but a lot of it sounds like things that if not outrightly accepted were tolerated. I will qualify that I haven't been able to follow the story very closely and if his behavior is Harvey Weinstein level I'll change my opinion but a the moment it doesn't sound criminal. [edit] I reread the article and yes the trying to lift up women's skirts is pretty awful. I had never heard about the allegation that he had a secret affair with his step daughter and this is one where I'm going to be careful about as it's coming from a second hand source.
This is something that I wrestle with too. I was a Charlie Rose fan and was very dissapointed when the stuff about him came up that said I don't like that PBS and CBS News have basically thrown him down the memory hole and almost act like he never existed. Or in the case of Stephen Colbert who was a friend of his viscously lampooning him as soon as the story broke. I think we can and should acknowledge that what these people did was awful and in cases where the law was broken should be prosecuted but I think air brushing them out of history like fallen Soviet Leaders is the wrong thing to do. These people did their jobs well and Charlie Rose harrassing an intern didn't change how he interviewed Bibi Netanyahu. I'm wondering if there is room for contrition and forgiveness or at the minimum acknowledging that their personal faults aside they were great entertainers, journalist or etc..
I'm not doubting that Freeman did plenty of skeevy stuff...but I'm not seeing what they are talking about in this interview. To me it looks like Morgan is kind of spacing out while Michael Caine tells a story of how he mistakenly assumed a woman was pregnant and Morgan responds with "Boy, do I wish I was there" ...which to me sounds like he wishes he could have witnessed Caine's social slip-up. None of that came off as creepy to me. Maybe for the people that were there it came off as different, somehow, but I'm not seeing it. But the woman that claims he was trying to lift up her skirt to see if she was wearing panties...well, that goes beyond "old man who was raised in a different time" to me. I'm pretty sure it has NEVER been acceptable to lift up your coworker's skirt to see if she was wearing underwear.
That is what it looked like to me too. Caine, barely glanced at him when he said that. Not really showing an expression of being caught off guard like the woman claims.
It was in the news many years before that Freeman was having a relationship w/ his step granddaughter & then it came out that they were even planning on getting married. Just rumors but it made actual news. They denied everything. Then her murderer boyfriend (I just found out she died, how terrible) says it was all true. Maybe it isn't & he's just lying, but I always thought it probably happened, just cause he's such a creepy dude.
