I understand how some people may question Harden's effort in this play but there are some things to consider before making any assumptions. On that play, Harden could be the trailing player that could step into a rhythm 3 at the top of the key. It is not uncommon to see four players running the break while one player trailing behind to step into a shot. The Rockets sometimes have Ryan Anderson as the trailing player on the break.

Another thing to consider is that Harden requires a lot of attention from defenders so by him slowly trailing behind, a defender also have to stay with him as well. It helps with spacing and stretch the defense out a bit to give room for players like CP3 or Eric Gordon to operate.

Also, by having one player trailing behind acts as a safeguard for the Rockets in case the other team gets the ball back for a breakaway score. When its a one possession game with under a minute remaining, it is important for a team to have one player trailing behind on the fast break to prevent an easy breakaway score.

That's how I look at it. Paul is one of the best ball handlers, creators, decision makers, and iso scorers in the game...if he's got a full head of steam on the fast break, there's no reason to rush in and disrupt things. I think Harden made the right decision to stay back on the play and trust CP3 to do his thing while still providing him an outlet to reset the offense if needed.

This isn't even in the same universe as something like TMac giving up against the Raptors.

All this makes sense but the thing about the breakaway score is that there was no more opportunity. That was the last Rockets possession.
