But he's not a good passer at all. He was 26th in comp % and 24th in YPA, which means he's constantly throwing short and isn't accurate. Combined with the fact he doesn't know the system and the team is bad, there's no actual football reason to want him. To say that he worked in SF is disingenuous, he was 1-10 with horrible numbers.
McNair's afraid that Kaepernick will alienate some fans. But putting out more of the same product we saw today is going to alienate fans anyway.
And putting out an even worse product by signing Kap and all the baggage that comes with him would alienate all but the SJW crowd and while I'm sure that group feels self important enough to think that's a good idea, it would be pretty catastrophic.
Except he was really efficient last year at what he was asked to do, without really having anything around him. He may or may not be good, but at a minimum, he'd be arguably the best backup QB in football. After watching several wasted seasons of a great defense with rotating QBs, and then another waste of a season with a hurt QB this year, why wouldn't you want depth at that position? Why not sign him to a 2-yr cheap deal (it's not like he has better options), let him start and get experience in the system this year, and then have a functional backup QB next year if needed for a few games? Is it better to have Savage or someone of that sort playing that role?
I'm not against signing him, there's just no point to it. We're like the packers at this point, if the starting QB gets hurt we're done, period. Whether the backup is the 45th best qb or the 42nd or the 65th or the 33rd is irrelevant. If Bob thinks he can develop him, then sign him. He's 30 though and has been awful for multiple years, i'd rather draft someone in the 5th round to develop next year. Edit- If we had last years defense that would be a different story.
Yes, if Watson's out for the season next year too, it likely doesn't matter. But what if he's injured for 3 or 4 games midseason? Having a Savage vs a Kaepernick could be the difference between making or not making the playoffs in that scenario. Backup QBs can't replace the starter, but they can make a huge difference over short periods.

It depends. I think the Texans are very top heavy in terms of talent. We don't have the same well rounded roster, top to bottom, that other teams do. As such, it's harder for us to manage injuries as well as other teams would. Should a good team missing its QB and two best pass rushers expect to compete for a playoff spot? No, not really. But a good team should still be able to beat an awful Colts team, who are also missing their star QB and have a putrid defense regardless of who's playing. We do not have a good roster. We have a small handful of top flight players that cover up how mediocre to subpar everyone else is. Any team is going to take a hit when their stars go down, but not many are going to look as bad as the Texans did today against a bad Indy team.
Cam Newton won MVP of the league with that same completion%. Even Kaepernick himself went to a Super Bowl with that comp%. Those scrambles and rushing yards really do help in keeping drives alive to complement not having pure accuracy. San Fran averaged 19.1 pts/gm in 2014 and went 8-8. They had 19.3 pts in 2016 and went 2-14. Sometimes its more than just QB numbers determining record

Savage looked bad against a league worst defense. Unless something happens he's going to look REALLY BAD when he plays any decent defensive unit.
How does the circus that surrounds Kap affect you, a fan, affect you any way whatsoever? He is a hell of a lot better than Tom Savage or any QB we have on this roster... And if you honestly think TJ Yates is better than Kaepernick, you have poor football knowledge.
Well, it hurts the team and makes the product on the field worse along with negatively affecting the view of the team off the field. So pretty much makes everything worse....but it would make some SJW's happy.....so there's that.
Higher 3-7 rounds picks are a good thing too! With the Brown haul, chances are we can trade into the 2nd round anyway. There is value in tanking period no matter what folks are saying. The question is, is their more value in Tank or Kap? as a fan I vote for Tank because Kap is not a long term piece and with so many key injuries this year is a wash. If Kap makes this team a SB contender (HE DOES NOT) than maybe you do it but since he doesn't Tank all the way and gear up for a 2018-19 SB run!!!
