Like most have said, Melo is still a top tier 3rd option. We aren't bringing him in to be "the guy". We are bringing him to be "a guy" who is better than who we presently have. His efficiency will be much improved as a 3rd option. Look at Harden's efficiency in OKC as a 3rd option and how that took a hit when he became "the guy".

 

he doesn't make us more likely to beat the warriors that ryno and a future pick does? at the very least he's an upgrade over ryno on both ends.

the melo you describe is NY melo. melo in NY is the first option on offense, on a team with poor spacing, where he plays SF. in houston he'll be a 3rd option. maybe second. his efficiency will go up with his reduced role. he'll be on a team with great spacing, and a great offensive system/coach. again, improving his efficiency. he'll play PF in houston instead of SF in NY. he may have lost a step making it difficult to beat SFs off the dribble, but he'll be able to take PFs off the bounce more consistently.

tl;dr: switching from primary option as a SF to secondary or tertiary option as a PF will improve his efficiency and add a couple years to his window as a borderline all-star. oh and at the very least he's an upgrade over ryno.

 

Wasn't it Codman that said we almost had Millsap this summer? I think he would have been a much better third best player due to his defense and ability to play off the ball. Besides Melo's ability to score in iso (at a much lower efficiency than either Harden or Paul) and the potential to be a great catch and shoot option, what makes him so deadly? His defense and passing suck. The only reason we want Melo is because he's better than Anderson and he wants to come here. We're not willing to give up a decent player or even a pick for him, which tells you his value at this point in his career.

A bunch of better players than Melo moved this summer: Millsap, Hayward, George. Griffin was a free agent. We just weren't in the running for most of them. Melo is a good third option, but he's got some deep flaws too.

not sure about the millsap situation. I do think hes a good player but as far as how this team is built, the rockets need a 4 that can stretch the floor and do it at an above average rate. millsap doesn't do that at a level needed to me

There's just no way that's true. Codman may have heard something about that, but Feigen reported that the Rockets never had any discussiosn with Millsap. People were talking about Millsap taking a major paycut to come here and it was NEVER realistic. We were not players for him at all.

 

Hope they don't pull an Osweiler.
