SCOTTSDALE — Carlos Beltran remains on the Rangers' radar, but the other team in Texas appears to be in pursuit of the designated hitter.

According to a source, the Astros are "hot" for Beltran, who spent half a season with Houston before signing with the Mets before the 2005 season. He played two and a half years with the Yankees before being traded to Texas before the trade deadline on August 1.

Think as a last resort ok. But too old to fit this team's short term objectives, let alone the long term. He's probably got 1 year in him. He'd make a nice pinch hitter for cheap.

I am sure the Astros will be calling Matt Holliday if Beltran goes elsewhere.

Depending on how old the dirt will be in Centerfield, he may just blend in as a hidden fielder.

No, that is exactly the objective he fits into...

While still productive, he's clearly plateaued; he's now a solid 120 OPS+ player - which, if you could guarantee it, would be a nice addition. But he (likely) won't exceed it, and at 40, the chance for regression is significant.

We need to make the playoffs first. By the time we are experienced enough and ready for the World Series, he's gone and we have another hole to plug. We need someone who can at least go 2 years I think.

I like the Beltran idea. I would prefer Joey Bats, but it definitely makes sense to sign Beltran for 1 year (with maybe a vesting option for a 2nd year) as opposed to taking a 3 or 4 year risk with Joey Bats. Beltran mitigates our risk because if his production does fall off a cliff, we are only taking the financial hit for one year. He is also a professional hitter, and I think he is talented enough to keep at least average production for a DH. Let's not forget that our DH production has been pretty miserable the last few years. Even taking an "average" Beltran would be a nice upgrade for our lineup.
