But the number of hours does matter... in terms of starters coming back. I think that is the main "spirit" behind not suspending games that are still very early (i.e. not official).... and it comes from a time where starters were expected to pitch most, if not all, of the game (and any disruption in that would vastly change the outlook of the team). I agree with you that the rule is archaic and in dire need of updating.... but MLB moves at its own "snail" pace.
