Important note on this - the official one is https://popcorntime.sh/. There are some fakes out there.
Another important note on this: Popcorn Time is a bittorrent system. Its bittorrent client just uses a Netflix style interface to provide a much cooler and easier user experience than what we've grown to think of as bt clients. You are as exposed to illegal content downloads as with any other torrent site, like Pirate Bay. that said, enjoy your popcorn!
Do they log IP's? If so, is it optimal to use Popcorn Time with a VPN like regular bittorrent client?
Logging IPs is not the issue. But yes, you'll need a VPN to protect yourself. The issue is the movies use a torrent swarm versus direct download, thus providing faster d/ls, more movie titles and more availability. But, to do that, the swarm seeders and peers are tracking your IPs and there is no way to stop that, because that's how torrents work. One of those seeds is a copyright spy tracking the IPs of the swarm and reporting you. That is independent of popcorntime, pirate bay or any other torrent search engine site. A VPN solves the issue with interacting in a torrent swarm, because the IP is not your IP address that your Internet Provider gives you for your home; rather it is an IP that the VPN host gives you, so your home IP is never known by the swarm.
