http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1607192 Houston Texans: The Texans, who cut down to one player below the 53-man roster on Sunday so they might add a fullback later, have filled the vacancy. Five-year veteran Greg Comella, ESPN.com has learned, has reached an agreement with the Texans on a contract of undetermined length. Comella, 28, was released Sunday by the Tennessee Titans in the mandatory roster purge. He was quickly contacted by Houston, which had him at the top of its fullback wish list. The position has been a problem area for the Texans this summer. The club was forced to place second-year veteran Jarrod Baxter, its starter in 2002, on injured reserve two weeks ago. Houston then acquired fourth-year fullback Deon Dyer from Miami but voided the trade when the former fourth-round draft choice failed his physical exam. A former Stanford star, Comella began his career with the New York Giants in 1998, making the roster as an undrafted free agent. He played four seasons with the Giants, then signed with Tennessee in 2002 as a free agent. He has appeared in 76 games and started 35, and he has just 17 rushes for 66 yards and no touchdowns. Comella, who is viewed as a solid blocker and receiver, has 94 catches for 639 yards and one touchdown. He played in 12 games for the Titans in 2002, starting seven, and had just 11 "touches" for the season.
It's official - they've signed him: Texans sign Comella September 1, 2003 HOUSTON - The Houston Texans announced today that they have signed free agent fullback Greg Comella. Comella (6-1, 248), has appeared in 76 games in his career, starting in 35. Comella spent the 2002 season as a member of the Tennessee Titans, playing in 12 games while starting seven at fullback. Last season, his blocking abilities paved the way for teammate Eddie George to register 1,165 yards. Prior to his 2002 campaign, he spent four seasons with the New York Giants, leading the way for another 1,000-yard rusher when Tiki Barber recorded 1,006 yards rushing. The former Stanford Cardinal has established himself as a steady weapon out of the backfield, catching 94 passes in his five-year career. To make room on the 53-man roster, the Texans will release a player to be named tomorrow.
He's MUCH better than our alternatives at the position and, I'm guessing, will be our starting fullback this season. Good signing that definately makes our team better... not amazingly better, but better. Now, didn't I just read that Lawyer Milloy is available?? hmmmm...
