A larger percentage of black people started playing basketball at an earlier age than white people?

Obviously just takin the piss. But there is a cultural difference with basketball culture compared to other sports.

    Yeah.

Soccer and Basketball are similar in that it takes nothing to play them. You just need to be in an area that has a field or court.

Just show up at a park, call next and wait your turn.

In tennis to make it to the pros you need also an extremely high level of skill. At least in the mens. Most pros have picked it up at before 6. Very very few have picked it at later age (8 I think Hewitt).
In basketball we have nba players who didn't even start playing until 12 or 14.

SO your claim that it is silly not to believe that black people are inherently more athletic than white people is based solely off your own personal observations while playing basketball?

Don't you think it is problematic that the basis to support your beliefs relies on two very inadequate/flawed assumptions? First that you playing basketball against other people is a suitable measurement in determining levels of athleticism in individuals and ethnicities and two, that your personal experiences and annecdotal observations are enough to make such a conclusion.

that's mostly the big guys...and many of them don't pan out. The percentage of people in the world 6'10 or taller is actually pretty small.

Again, if this was about black american men being more athletic, they would be dominating other sports that require a high degree of athleticism like tennis and soccer.

In basketball you can pan out => be an nba player, or at least get a contract that pays at some league , even if you have limited skills and you are 6'10.
And not even only C. PFs and even some wings. At what age did Deng start playing?
Example : Bismack Biyombo who has hooves for hands.
In tennis there is no way you reach top150 if you have no skills and you just run around fast. Or even win a satellite.

Don't know about football too much but from my limited knowledge all professional football players as well have started playing very young.

Tennis and football (soccer) are different than basketball because even if you are a freak athlete you won't make it far without top skills. There are nba players with guaranteed contracts whose basketball skills are highly questionable and are only relying on athleticism.

Even though I disagree with a lot of what you're saying, I don't want to derail the thread too much more.

Let's separate the height conversation. The players you are describing that get into the NBA without any skill is because of their height. That has nothing to do with athleticism and it's actually true for groups other than american blacks (you yourself mentioned players that aren't from america).

Now, back to athleticism. You will not stay in the NBA on athleticism alone. If that was the case, the and1 guys would be in the NBA. I would guess that pretty much all of the guys that you think are just athletic (that aren't also really tall) actual have a ton of skill/talent (offensive rebounding, defensive instincts, high motor, etc)

It's hard to deny that black people are genetically advantaged running and jumping. But obviously they are not so advantaged that their pure athletic advantage will trump the skills in individual sports that require honing, such as kicking with accuracy in soccer, or ball placement in tennis. But at the same time, there is no indication that whites or any other non-black race are genetically better in those aspects (i.e., no single race is genetically better at kicking, or at hand-eye coordination--it's likely you'll have variation with good and bad within each race). So on balance, blacks still have an athletic advantage in these sports as both of them do involve running, and to a lesser extent, jumping.

My theory is that the reason tennis and soccer is not dominated by black people is opportunity and culture, with both of these sports traditionally not played by black kids. If you take a random black kid and random non-black kid, neither of them whom have played any sport before, and put them into the same soccer or tennis training program, more often than not, the black kid will come out ahead.

Yes and this article and the science behind it are saying that Kenyans belonging to a certain tribe are better runners in general than most. It doesn't say black people worldwide are genetically running and jumping. It says Kenyan's in a certain tribe are. Which scientifically makes sense, race is more about region then what people think of race (Skin tone, facial features...)

So it really doesn't apply to african-american's at all. It also says there is more to athleticism than running and jumping.

You're argument on soccer for instance does play out in the real world. Plenty of people within the African diaspora LOVE to play soccer. That sport is not dominated by Africans, sure there have been tons of great african players. Some of them are scouted and go train at the big clubs at a young age. It just doesn't work out.

White people are only good at sports that require the use of tools - hockey, tennis, baseball, cycling, etc.

Umm. Sensitive much? What exactly is racist about that?

As far as your first highlight goes. What? Is it not true that it's better that they were put into slavery instead of being killed off like the Natives? What exactly is racist about that? I'd take the whip over the noose any day. There's a freaking half black president. Black millionaires. Black culture is cool in todays society. Where are the natives? Still kept in poverty and made to shut up. What few are left are kept in reservations. Til this day no one likes to mention this countries dark history. It's only supposed to be super sensitive to slavery. Well this country had slavery like many other countries, but i think genocide tops that, don't you?

Your second highlight is even more laughable. Racist? I's stereotypical. The word racist is thrown around so easily. What is racist about those slang words? Did you even bother to look those words up? None of that slang is racist. You just automatically assumed it was because you didn't understand it and knew i was making a black person speak like that. Go watch Attack The Block(2011). A good little flick starring John Boyega who will be in the new Star wars. You will see that's just how they speak. It's an urban slang for British kids(most notably-black kids). There's your stereotype.

When did this country get so damn sensitive? Can't even say the color black these days or make a joke about asians and bad driving or Indians and curry. Even anything Rockets related, this forum is overly sensitive. One little joke about one of our players and the entire place goes t*** up.

So relax yourself and quit pulling out the race card any chance you get.

Stereotypes wouldn't exist if they weren't true. The problem is you guys think were making a generalization that is true for every single individual case. This is obviously never the intent of someone pointing out a stereotype. But, it's something sensitive people always try and use to point out racism.

This dude making me out to be Michael Richards or something.
