Bush Jokes About Failure to Find WMD. Offends Many.

i know that no defense will matter to you....and i'm not willing to spend much energy defending bush....

but i doubt he did this with malice or ill will. he certainly has reason to be defensive about this...and i know i've used humor as a means to deal with an uncomfortable situation before. i'm guessing/hoping that's it.

 

I have a nephew who is finishing up his combat training now at Camp pendleton for the Marines. I haven't lost anyone that I know in Iraq. Another person in the army that I know, just came back safe and sound.

I might feel differently had I lost somebody in the conflict, but I really don't see anything wrong with Bush's joke. It could also be because I write comedy, and I have empathy for attacks on humorous writing.

I'm one of Bush's biggest critics, but this one doesn't bother me. I think making light of one's problems is healthy, and can be funny. Even if this did offend me, it would be about down at about #178 on priority list of my greivances with Bush.

 

Right there with you. It was a touch insensitive, but a non-issue for me.

 

I think this is precisely why his cavalier attitude and inability to understand why it is not funny that leads many of us to want to limit him to one term.

I would venture to say that none of the decisions in his administration have been undertaken with ill will or malice but have ultimately had these consequences.

agreed....there are bigger things to worry about than some bad attempts at humor. i think we need to address the stupidity of these presidential roast things. that should be the real issue.

 

If a comedian told this joke, no one would mind. We've all been hearing them for months anyway. To me, it sounds like he's trying at least to laugh at himself, and add a little humor to the situation. And you need to have the perspective to laugh at yourself/ realize when you've screwed up.

I don't agree with everything he's done, but this doesn't seem like a problem... he's just trying to handle it as best he can.

(I hate election years; each candidate will try to turn everything the other does/says into something awful no matter what. It makes me seriously want to not vote. Why can't we ever get anyone in office who doesn't have to be petty and negative in their campaign? )

Yes, but the comedian's skit would have an entierly different perspective. As an extreme example, Mel Brooks making fun of Nazis is funny in a wierd sort of way, but Nazis doing the same joke would not be funny at all.

Also, if Bush really realized he had screwed up, wouldn't he just come out and say so?

I think the problem comes in where you're laughing at yourself about a screw up that you made that resulted in a number of people being killed. I can see why people would be understandably offended by it.

I mean, if you accidentally ran over someone in your car (non-intentional, not your fault, etc), would you ever make a joke about it? Especially if you knew the victim's family would hear the joke?

This isn't a huge deal, but it still shows very poor taste IMHO.

I don't even want to go into his lies about WMD. Just look at the faces of the families when their sons come home in a coffin.

Just like blatantly using 9/11 for his re-election, this man's shamelessness offends every single human being (not just Americans) on the face of the earth.

No matter how much worse John Kerry is, he knows first hand what a war is all about.

I think this is just an example taking something pretty small and blowing it all out of proportion. In my opinion interpreting this as disrespect to our soldiers is reading way too much into it. It was just a joke that wasnt is very good taste and he was just trying to make light of something he has been heavily critisized on.

It's just Bush trying to quell the political firestorm with the forrest gumpian electoral personality he has ridden from day 1.

It's not hugely offensive, but it's just pretty stupid and tasteless, take things seriously, ya know?
