One can't help contrast Bush's silly approach to this serious matter with the anguish that LBJ and even Nixon exhibited during the Vietnam War as they presided over a war in which Americans were being killed daily

After telling us we were going to war over wmd, he really doesn't give a hoot that we didn't find them. Is this because he didn't care whether there were any or not?

Does he still think he is president of that frat at Yale?

Bush jokes about search for WMD, but it's no laughing matter for critics

President George Bush sparked a political firestorm yesterday after making what many judged a tasteless and ill-judged joke about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Mr Bush made the joke at a black-tie event for radio and television journalists in Washington on Wednesday night.

He narrated a slide show, described as the White House election year album, making hay of the administration's reputation for secrecy and strained relations with European allies. But it was the joke about the war in Iraq that drew attacks.

A slide showed Mr Bush in the Oval office, leaning to look under a piece of furniture. "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere," he told the audience, drawing applause.

Another slide showed him peering into another part of the office, "Nope, no weapons over there," he said, laughing. "Maybe under here," he said, as a third slide was shown.

John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat who will fight Mr Bush for the White House said the joke displayed a "stunningly cavalier" attitude.

"If George Bush thinks his deceptive rationale for going to war is a laughing matter, then he's even more out of touch than we thought. Unfortunately for the president, this is not a joke."

He added: "585 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq in the last year, 3,354 have been wounded and there's no end in sight. George Bush sold us on going to war with Iraq based on the threat of weapons of mass destruction. But we still haven't found them, and now he thinks that's funny?"

The statement from Mr Kerry also included a comment from an Iraqi war veteran, Brad Owens.

"War is the single most serious event that a president or government can carry its people into," he said. "This cheapens the sacrifice that American soldiers and their families are dealing with every single day."

CNN viewers emailed the network to vent their anger at the joke. "How can a thinking, caring human being joke about the lies that led to body bags and broken young men and women? I was appalled," wrote one viewer. Another said: "It was tasteless and childish. It shows the true man - or child in his case."

The defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, later declined to give an opinion at a press conference. "To know what I would think, I would have to be there," he said.

Mr Bush's skit poked fun of members of the administration, including Mr Rumsfeld.

When he showed another slide, the president joked: "Oops, this photo wasn't supposed to be in here. This is the skull and bones secret signal."

i know that no defense will matter to you....and i'm not willing to spend much energy defending bush....

but i doubt he did this with malice or ill will. he certainly has reason to be defensive about this...and i know i've used humor as a means to deal with an uncomfortable situation before. i'm guessing/hoping that's it.

I have a nephew who is finishing up his combat training now at Camp pendleton for the Marines. I haven't lost anyone that I know in Iraq. Another person in the army that I know, just came back safe and sound.

I might feel differently had I lost somebody in the conflict, but I really don't see anything wrong with Bush's joke. It could also be because I write comedy, and I have empathy for attacks on humorous writing.

I'm one of Bush's biggest critics, but this one doesn't bother me. I think making light of one's problems is healthy, and can be funny. Even if this did offend me, it would be about down at about #178 on priority list of my greivances with Bush.

Right there with you. It was a touch insensitive, but a non-issue for me.

I think this is precisely why his cavalier attitude and inability to understand why it is not funny that leads many of us to want to limit him to one term.

I would venture to say that none of the decisions in his administration have been undertaken with ill will or malice but have ultimately had these consequences.

I agree. I dont think someone who honestly believed that wmd were present and the reason for Americans to go and die would find this funny.

agreed....there are bigger things to worry about than some bad attempts at humor. i think we need to address the stupidity of these presidential roast things. that should be the real issue.

If a comedian told this joke, no one would mind. We've all been hearing them for months anyway. To me, it sounds like he's trying at least to laugh at himself, and add a little humor to the situation. And you need to have the perspective to laugh at yourself/ realize when you've screwed up.

I don't agree with everything he's done, but this doesn't seem like a problem... he's just trying to handle it as best he can.

(I hate election years; each candidate will try to turn everything the other does/says into something awful no matter what. It makes me seriously want to not vote. Why can't we ever get anyone in office who doesn't have to be petty and negative in their campaign? :( )

    I also agree.

Yes, but the comedian's skit would have an entierly different perspective. As an extreme example, Mel Brooks making fun of Nazis is funny in a wierd sort of way, but Nazis doing the same joke would not be funny at all.

Also, if Bush really realized he had screwed up, wouldn't he just come out and say so?

I think the problem comes in where you're laughing at yourself about a screw up that you made that resulted in a number of people being killed. I can see why people would be understandably offended by it.

I mean, if you accidentally ran over someone in your car (non-intentional, not your fault, etc), would you ever make a joke about it? Especially if you knew the victim's family would hear the joke?

This isn't a huge deal, but it still shows very poor taste IMHO.

I'm stunned after I saw this idiot made fun of American people again.

I don't even want to go into his lies about WMD. Just look at the faces of the families when their sons come home in a coffin.

Just like blatantly using 9/11 for his re-election, this man's shamelessness offends every single human being (not just Americans) on the face of the earth.

No matter how much worse John Kerry is, he knows first hand what a war is all about.

I count several people in this thread alone who are not offended. Did someone call a gathering here or are there more?

I think this is just an example taking something pretty small and blowing it all out of proportion. In my opinion interpreting this as disrespect to our soldiers is reading way too much into it. It was just a joke that wasnt is very good taste and he was just trying to make light of something he has been heavily critisized on.

    I agree.

It's just Bush trying to quell the political firestorm with the forrest gumpian electoral personality he has ridden from day 1.

It's not hugely offensive, but it's just pretty stupid and tasteless, take things seriously, ya know?

Jesus Christ (not meaning to offend any of you leftist/communist/socialist/atheists), Get a sense of humor people. Did you even see the slides that he showed when he cracked the joke? In one of them he looked like he was trying to look up his asscrack!

Get it?!? Bush is looking up his asscrack for Saddam's WMD?!?

If you don't see the humor in that, then you are one sorry humorless asswipe. Hell, even Nancy Pelosi laughed at it. And if you are not loose enough to laugh at that (when even those troops are, the ones who "wasted" their service according to you people), well then, I guess that John I have a F. ing rod up my ass Kerry is truly your man... Cause we know he takes war and peace issues seriously: http://www.washingtontimes.com/op-ed/20040323-091214-1608r.htm

And BTW, I still think they're buried there somewhere. ;)
