I have no idea whether this is just a pr stunt but I just ran across this:

Houston Rockets' Yao Ming Selected Inaugural "Goodwill Ambassador" by Genesis Technology Group

Annual Award Bestowed to Best Candidate to Improve Sino-American Relations

BOCA RATON, FL -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 01/02/2003 -- Genesis Technology Group, Inc. (OTC BB: GTEC), a leading Sino-American business development firm, announced that N.B.A. rookie star, Yao Ming of China, has been selected as the first Sino-American "Goodwill Ambassador" for the year 2003. The annual award is bestowed “for contributing to good relations and a better understanding between the peoples” of the two countries.

“What a fitting individual to be the inaugural recipient” remarked Genesis CEO Gary Wolfson. “Yao Ming is able to stride across oceans. He is a huge presence both in the U.S. and China. Sports is a universal language. Remember back to the ‘table tennis diplomacy’ of the Nixon era to the prospects of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the friendship between our peoples and the heightened appreciation of our cultures are intensified through sports.”

The Company’s Sales & Marketing Coordinator, Melanie Eckenroth, spoke both in Mandarin and English at the December 16th awards ceremony held courtside at the American Airlines Arena in Miami: “This is the first year we are presenting this award. We have chosen Yao Ming because of his commitment to strengthening the development of relations between China and America. We believe that through sports, the relationship between China and America can become closer. We hope future relations between China and America continue to prosper.”

Reported The New York Times on December 15th: “Of the 120 N.B.A. games that will be broadcast in China this season, 30 will involve [Yao’s Houston] Rockets. Some games have the potential to reach up to 280 million households, roughly equal to the entire population of the United States. This gives corporate sponsors a chance, through advertising placards being shown on television, to gain entry into a consumer market of 1.2 billion people.”
