OK, so I'm getting sick of all the political threads...they only seem to inspire uncivil behavior among us (myself included) when the real reason we are here is our common love of the Houston Rockets. So...check this thread out: Let's say that sometime in the not-so-distant future, the Rockets fail to get a new arena built and move out of Houston. Not only out of Houston, but also out of the state. My question: Would you still support and root for the Rockets after they have moved? Why or why not? If you are into football, did you support and root for the Tennessee Titans after the Houston Oilers ceased to exist? ------------------ Bring It!!
Yes I would still support the Rockets. I feel they've gotten a bum deal when compared to the Astros and Texans. If Alexander wasn't a Yankee, Jeff wouldn't be a mini-celebrity right now. I don't put them in the same boat as the Oilers. Alexander didn't start off by threatening to move the team. He didn't sucker the voters to approve a $67 million renovation of the Laptop, and then still move. Alexander actually won somethings, he didn't fire an icon, he didn't allow coaches to make mockeries of our team and city. Adams did all this and more. He threatened to move to Seattle in the late 60s, Atlanta in the 70s, Jacksonville in the 80s, and Tennessee in the 90s. He would only play in a dome or share a facility with the Rockets. He wouldn't even consider an open-air stadium. Basically, I'm glad he's gone. I hear Freak typing as we speak, and I know what he's going to say, "Why didn't Lanier let the voters decide?" Adams had the support of no one in the community. McClane did. It's as simple as that. There's no way that football vote would've passed. ------------------ "I'll drop kick those f*ckin' dogs if they come anywhere near me." visit www.swirve.com [This message has been edited by Rocketman95 (edited August 15, 2000).]
RM95, I don't understand the jewish yankee bit... I would definitely follow the Rockets. I will still have an attatchment to the players. I somewhat rooted for the Titans (every now and then). But I never liked them too much, anyway, so it does not compare. The Rockets will always be the Rockets. ------------------ "Feminism is a Socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy cpitalism, and become lesbians" -Rev Pat Robertson
Ummm, pardon my ignorance, but what exactly do you mean by this statement? ------------------ Bring It!!
Sure, I'd follow the Rockets. I'm still a die-hard Oilers (Titans) fan. But if the Rockets move because of a blown new stadium deal, I'll do anything and everything I can to see that Eckels is run out of town too (and I'm a Republican). Ditto for Watson - hockey has never/will never be a big draw in Houston. And to lose the Rockets because Chuck Watson wants to be a delfish jerk is just criminal! ------------------ "Who Wants To Be A Rocket?" - and probably a millionaire as well. The off-season will be interesting!
What I mean by that is that he's an outsider, and that Texans generally don't like people that aren't like them. Ever wonder why McClane and McNair had no problems and Watson is getting support left and right, yet the only owner in this town's history who has done everything in his power to put a winning team on the court will probably be forced to move his team? Sorry if I offended anyone, I'll edit the post. ------------------ "I'll drop kick those f*ckin' dogs if they come anywhere near me." visit www.swirve.com
RM95...thanks for making it clear. No offense taken. Bobby...I truly believe that if the Rockets move due to this failed deal, lots of Houstonians will be echoing your sentiments about Judge Eckels, no matter what their political beliefs are. ------------------ Bring It!!
If the Rockets left town, they would no longer be the Houston Rockets, so I wouldn't support them in any way, just as I don't want to hear anything about the Titans. I'll just go on to become a Mavs fan ('cause I think Cuban is great for a franchise and they're building the team to become something really good). ------------------ Just shut up and post
Tex: Hell yeah I will still root for the Rockets or whatever they will be called. To answer your second question about the Titans. Just read my new banner. Man I loved watching that Monday night game last night. I know it was just preseason but it sure felt great beating the hell out of the Rams. I am Titans fanatic and I can't wait for the NFL season to start. To summarize I am and have been a loyal diehard Houston sports fan for the past 20 years. Even though I have never lived in Houston. I have always supported the Astro's, Rockets, and Oilers (now Titans) and will continue to do so!!! No matter where they play. It just pisses me off that a city like Houston lost their NFL team, almost lost the Astro's, and now could lose the Rockets. ------------------ Titan's fanatic!!!! It was the first time the Titans sent an offense to the line of scrimmage with Eddie George in the backfield behind McNair to go with Wycheck at tight end and Carl Pickens, Kevin Dyson and Yancey Thigpen at wide receiver. So many choices, with a full season still ahead. "I think that might be scary for a defense," Dyson said.
I'd follow some of the players.... But, then again I follow ex-Rockets too. But, I wouldn't be a "fan", just as I'm not a fan of the Titans. In fact, I hate Bud Adams. He took away my team. I was an Oiler fan since 1975. At the age of 5, before I even knew what was really happening on the field, I knew I loved the game of football. I hope I can get into being a fan of our new team, but it just won't be the same was growing up wanting to play for them. ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem. DREAMer's Rocket Page
I would love Rockets just as much even if they left. I dont care if they are called Las Vegas Gamblers or whatever. But I'm hoping it doesnt come to any of that. ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Posting in stupid threads is not FUN! 2. Spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure are not FUN! 3. What actually makes you a fan of a particular team? 1)The players are often those who you really respect or love to watch. For me, it all started with Hakeem as my favorite player. Are we as attached to the young guns we have on our team if the Rockets do end up leaving? 2)The City. Often the team you support is the one from you city or area. If they move, it's not worth it anymore for a lot of people. Imagine the American Olymipic suddenly changing nationality. Would you support the country they're now from? 3)The name or anything in that sense. No matter how dumb you think it is, a lot of kids become fans if the team has a "cool" uniform, name, and/or logo. Granted, the Rockets probably didn't get too many fans this way. I think that the above reasons usually don't apply to the die-hard fan. Those would fall under two categories: 1) Those who support the team no matter where they are. 2) Those who are left bitter, combined with some of the reasons above. I would probably fall under number 2 for the die-hards. ------------------ Nederland 2002 Qualifying Campaign (Damn those penalties!!!) Freak, In response to your last reply regarding the Titan's being on TV. You will get your chance this season. The Titan's have been rewarded for going to the superbowl last year with 3 appearances on Monday Night Football (MNF) and one appearance on ESPN Sunday night football (opening night). Here are the dates for those games September 3 - Titans at Bills - ESPN -7:30pm EST (Rematch of last years AFC Wildcard game. After the Oilers chocked in that playoff game in Buffalo in the 90's it was so sweet seeing the Titan's win with the Music City Miracle against the Bill's. I will always remember that game. I get goosebumps thinking about that play.) October 16 - Jaguars at Titans - MNF -9pm EST (These two teams hate each other. This has become one of the best rivalaries in the NFL.) October 30 - Titans at Redskins - MNF -9pm EST (This could be a superbowl preview and definately one of best matchups of the season.) December 25 - Cowboys at Titans - MNF -9pm EST (Should be a fun game to watch. Not sure if the rivalary is still there since it is no longer for bragging rights on who has the best NFL team in Texas.) Man I can't wait!!! As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't root for them if they left. Look, I blame Ol' Bob Lanier more than anyone for the Oilers departure, but the fact is, it's Nahville's team now. If the Titan's had won the Superbowl, they would not be congratulating Houston at all. That is why I can't support them anymore. I've got too much Houston pride. On a side note, it made me want to vomit when the Titans/Oilers were going to the Superbowl, and they were interviewing Jeff Fisher after the game in Jacksonville. He spoke in front of everyone... "The people in Tennessee have waited a long time for this, but this year we made it!" What in his mind justifies a long time? Three weeks?!? He can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. ------------------ How about the Houston Comets and their quest to become "Quadrepeatchicks!"
I would definitely have mixed feelings, much like the move of the Oilers brought. After the Oilers left I was bitter, but couldn't help but root for "my teams" players. I tried to hate the Titans, but just couldn't. I also moved to the New Orleans area, so it did help my transition to rooting for the Saints. Regardless, I am an Oilers fan (not a Titans fan). I think that "retiring" the name and uniforms left a bad taste in my mouth. I wish that the new team could take the Oilers identity, thus preserving the teams history (Earl Campbell is Houston's!!!!) If the Rockets leave I guess I would feel the same. In fact, I think in basketball, you get more attached to the players, because you get to see more personality. ------------------
I'd probably just stop watching the NBA, which would be really sad. I've already pretty much stopped watching the NFL at this point. I root for the Titans to do good, and I watch them if they're on TV, but they're never on usually. Maybe that will change after the Super Bowl appearance. Oh, and I'd hope that someone dropped a bomb on the city of Houston, and blow that pathetic city away. This is only if the Rockets get kicked out, of course. ------------------ Metal Sludge
