Why Morey should aggressively pursue a 3rd star: Because Harden/Howard aren't Lebron or Durant

It seems there's a sizable contingent of Rockets fans who are content with Harden and Howard. That we can build around them. And while I agree that we are contenders, that we certainly have a legit shot at winning it all, I still believe we're a little short.

And the reason is because while Howard and Harden are legit superstars, they're not a tier above everyone else. Neither are transcend players that can literally carry a team on his back.

History is filled with 2-stars teams that never got over the hump. Malone/Stockton were arguably the best players at their position for much of their career. But could not win against bigger stars in Hakeem and Jordan. Kemp/Payton, Barkley/Johnson met similar fates. More recently, Nash/Amare could not cut it against prime Duncan nor prime Shaq/Kobe. Personally, I find Howard/Harden more in line with these players more than I see them in Hakeem/Clyde, Pippen/Jordan, Kobe/Shaq type of teams.

And here's where having having another star can make all the difference in the world. Barkley/Hakeem/Clyde, despite Hakeem already slowing down, despite starting Matt freaking Maloney and played the likes of Eddie Johnson, almost made the finals. Pistons overcame the Lakers star power with top-shelf talent at multiple positions. Boston's big-3 beat Kobe in his prime.

IMO, in order to overcome players like Lebron and Durant, the Rockets should look to get another impact player. To beat quality with quantity. Just look at the Spurs in the finals. If Manu was even Manu of 3 years ago, they would've overcame Lebron James.

I think you undersell Dwight a little bit because I do think he is one of the league's transcendent players in this little era of ours. I do agree however that a 3rd star would be ideal, but you can't blow up the unit you have to get him.

You should realize that aside from a handful of 2-stars team in the history such as Jordan/Pippen, the rest all have a dominating center. Now we have one.

You can win a championship with 2 stars, if you have high quality role players around them.

Even for Jordan/Pippen, the last 3 trophies came with Rodman, more like 3 star system.

We actually need better role players that aren't too one dimensional offensively. Who? Nate Robinson, jj barea, a white jr smith,...... Players that can insert offense into a tired Dwight or harden.

Nate Robinson is a player that I'd love to have if he fit on the team.

But, who are you getting rid of to bring him in? Lin isn't going anywhere, so are you saying dump Bev?

Rodman is a one way superstar role player but not a superstar in the sense of a two way superstar.

So Parsons isn't a star now? As a third option on this team, Parsons is Exactly what we need. He is above average on defense, He is Clutch when it counts, don't get hung up on"star" labels. We do have a third star. Just because he doesn't receive the acclaim of others "Stars", doesn't change the fact that he is are 3rd Star

Rodman's not a superstar at all. He was just an elite role player. A superstar is a player you can build a team around and obviously Rodman wasn't that.

The Rockets are legitimate title contenders now. best outlook since yao mcgrady days.

Now the real question is will they elevate their game in crunch time. That is what seperated Hakeem, Kobe, Jordan, Wade, Lebron from Stockton, Malone, Barkley, etc.

The thing with Wade and Bosh is, this past year in the playoffs neither played like a superstar. Bosh had no offense essentially, and Wade lost his burst until the last game when he just decided to sacrifice his knee cartilage for the rest of his life in return for one good game.

Even in the beginning, 3 stars were gonna be necessary there because LEBRON AND WADE NEVER MESHED THAT WELL. Both are on ball dominators, so in the crunch invariably there will be a limitation on who can execute down the stretch.

With Dwight and Harden there is no such clash. Their games fit seamlessly with each other. In and out, in and out. Harden is unselfish, the best in the NBA at the PnR, and a great spot up shooter to boot. So it's not gonna be like Shaq Kobe. Because our Kobe is unselfish and can actually hit an outside shot.

Only 2 players in the NBA right now has gone to the finals without another perennial all-star. One is Lebron in Cleveland. Guess the other person? Hint.. He wears red now and rhymes with white.

People really underestimate how much of an impact Howard makes. He is the reason the Lakers finished the season 28-12 and made the playoffs last year.

Those centers also were the best players of their generation. While Howard is certainly the best center in the game, he's not the two-way player like Hakeem, Duncan, Shaq, etc.
