Throughout the course of game 4, we took 17 jumpers from 8ft-25ft out (and some of those were taken in garbage time). In the 2nd and 3rd quarters, we took 8 jumpers from 5ft-25ft out. I know many teams do the same (actually the Clips had a similiar number during the same game) but it seems like if the Clippers are clogging the paint and playing tough perimiter defense it'd be lucrative to pay a bit mroe attention to mid-range jumpers. I don't what the reluctance of, not just our team, but most modern day players to take more midrange jumpers is. If the vast majority of your shots come from 1ft-5ft out and 25ft-26ft out then it's barely even a freaking basketball game - I mean it makes the game extremely narrow. What's so hard about setting a screen 18ft away from the basket and taking a jumper from there?
They are inefficient and in all honesty most of our players other than Harden do not have a mid-range game.
This is the answer. Because we don't have very good midrange shooters. We have mediocre three point shooters.
One major problem with our philosophy is the Clippers are taking away the 3. A lot of the 3's we take are contested. We are unable to drive because Jordan is shutting everything down inside. The mid range 2 is just about all that's being given to us, but we don't have the personnel or the desire to take those shots.
Alright...so name me some players on our team that you are NOT ok with them taking a mid range 2, but ARE ok with them taking a 3.
This. A lot of people ITT can't seem to grasp the concept that usually player will shoot a better percentage from 18ft out then they will from 25ft out. It doesn't matter if they're a bad shooter, a good shooter, a mediocre shooter - normally a player will shoot a higher percentage when they're closer to the basket - AND it opens up the floor. It's not a hard concept.
They may shoot a slightly better percentage a few feet in, but the point per shot is less. 3 > 2. Anyway, what year is it? Rockets have been this way for a long time. Odd to just now have this question.
If they're wide open...sure. The problem is we are taking too many contested 3's, and passing up wide open mid range shots.
