Without Malcolm X would MLK have succeeded? I don't think so. I think when while people saw malcolm x they were more likely to barter with king. However if they there was no malcom x what would be incentive to negotiate?

Just like you could argue ww2 was as much the reason that india got independence as ghandi.

That seems like messed up reasoning. Would Churchill, De Gaulle, or Patton have had the impacts they did if it wasn't for Adolf Hitler? Should we give Hitler some of the credit for these guys?

(No, I'm not comparing Malcolm X to Hitler.)

IMO, we shouldn't have holidays to represent a segmented people in the first place.

Christ has pretty much been phased out from Christmas on the government level.

MLK was a symbol of equality for people of every race, not just the black community.

Except Malcom X was not a bad guy.

He wanted rights and was willing to take it instead of pleading for it.

I don't know where to begin...but MLK and other civil rights leaders efforts didn't benefit their "segment" only.

King stood for many, many honorable things... and represented far more than just black people and their particular struggle.

Okay, but you're essentially arguing that he should get credit in the reflected glory of MLK. Honestly, there were many, many people who contributed to the success of the civil rights movement, generally, and to the success of King as well. We don't have days to celebrate everyone. You could argue that the Martin Luther King construct that we celebrate today is embodying the work of King, Malcolm X, and everyone else that participated to get us the results we got.

I'm not a big fan of naming days (or buildings, or anything else) after particular people. I think we'd be better off celebrating Civil Rights Day, or something like that. It'd give us an opportunity to talk about the contributions of Malcolm X today, at least.

Is that what all holidays are? I'll never get a break.

    Veteran's Day (vets)
    Mother's day (moms)
    Father's day (dads)
    Christmas (christians)
    President's day (presidents)
    Labor day (employed people)

Guys like john mccain would pee in their pants, from anger, if we had a malcom x day. People standing up to the government and the fbi, by all means neccessary, is unamerican.

with the exception of marital fidelity... not to discredit his accomplishments, he was a good man with great aspirations.. just not exactly a man of honor..
