They focused on the issues, not on his character. In different ways, both of them are seen as outsiders, not as members of what in Italy is defined as the political caste.

The Democratic Party should learn this lesson. It should not do as the Republicans did after President Obama was elected. Their preconceived opposition to any of his initiatives poisoned the Washington well, fueling the anti-establishment reaction (even if it was a successful electoral strategy for the party). There are plenty of Trump proposals that Democrats can agree with, like new infrastructure investments. Most Democrats, including politicians like Mrs. Clinton and Bernie Sanders and economists like Lawrence Summers and Paul Krugman, have pushed the idea of infrastructure as a way to increase demand and to expand employment among non-college-educated workers. Some details might be different from a Republican plan, but it will add credibility to the Democratic opposition if it tries to find the points in common, not just differences.

And an opposition focused on personality would crown Mr. Trump as the people’s leader of the fight against the Washington caste. It would also weaken the opposition voice on the issues, where it is important to conduct a battle of principles.

Democrats should also offer Mr. Trump help against the Republican establishment, an offer that would reveal whether his populism is empty language or a real position. For example, with Mr. Trump’s encouragement, the Republican platform called for reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act, which would separate investment and commercial banking. The Democrats should declare their support of this separation, a policy that many Republicans oppose. The last thing they should want is for Mr. Trump to use the Republican establishment as a fig leaf for his own failure, dumping on it the responsibility for blocking the popular reforms that he promised during the campaign and probably never intended to pass. That will only enlarge his image as a hero of the people shackled by the elites.

Finally, the Democratic Party should also find a credible candidate among young leaders, one outside the party’s Brahmins. The news that Chelsea Clinton is considering running for office is the worst possible. If the Democratic Party is turning into a monarchy, how can it fight the autocratic tendencies in Mr. Trump?

Same reason Caroline was (almost) gift-wrapped a Senate seat. Nostalgia and branding matters as much as it always has.

John Jr., hypothetically, could have just kept dinging his uncles, cousins and Bill in George editorials, run for Moynihan's seat instead of Hillary, and been front and center for 2008.

Chelsea seems like a very fine, upstanding person, who wouldn't have the baggage (nor the experience) her mother did, but still have the name recognition. But, will the Dems, or the country, have Clinton fatigue? For her to make a run for President, I think she would need some intervening steps in other offices or roles. Let's see if she takes those steps.

OMG!! the Wall Street Dems and I guess the Clintons in particular are completely deluded.

They might be able to get her in the House of Representatives in the right district composed almost exclusively of upper class Dems, with the Wall Streeters and the Clintons spending many millions , but the girl just does not have it.

As to why there are rumors floating around about Chelsea running for office, it is the same reason why there are rumors about Corey Booker. The Establishment is scared that in 2020 a person like Warren or Sanders will get the Dem nomination and might become president upsetting the bipartisan control of the Establishment of our government.

The article is just talking about her running for a seat in the House to represent New York. Maybe a couple of decades from now she throws in her hat for the Presidency, but this is all very premature. She might run for the House. And why not? She's a smart lady who got a good education and now some good work experience, and she grew up in politics. I don't see why she wouldn't make a good Representative.

Agree strongly with glynch and that's saying something. People are done with the Bush/Clinton brands. And Chelsea, based on her speeches and her writing, does not have the smarts of her parents. I thought her speech at the convention was almost unendurable. Seems totally out of touch with meat and potatoes America. The Dems need more Biden, more Scranton, less Clinton, less prep school.

Those Clinton Foundation articles paints her as having a millennial conscience (more reform and transparency), but everything has been handed to her and she's never displayed one effort to distance away from her name nor reach down to connect with said "meat and potatoes".

Marrying a Wall Street doofus and hobnobbing with Ivanka and her billionaire real estate husband doesn't strike one iota of confidence or excitement.

On further thought, part of why Bubba stated to have amassed a quarter billion dollar funding drive in the span that Hillary was moonlighting as a public servant (and possibly cost her the election) was to hand the foundation over to Chelsea after he leaves.

Typical Clinton cake havings and eatings.
