Yea it was totally crazy and then some other guy came in and added 'This is the most important thing' to the post for no reason. And then even a 3rd guy came and pretended like the 2nd guy wasn't even there. Very weird stuff.

Perhaps there is a difference between the concepts of controversy and "polled well"?

Seems Trump invested in the company building the pipeline back in 2015....

It seems we know he invested in it but we can't verify he sold off his shares.

You need to consider what the other alternatives are. Coal, for example. The anti-oil crowd likes to just assume that the alternative is some environmentally friendly source, like solar and wind (while ignoring the environmental issues those also pose)...but usually the choice is some other source of hydrocarbon fuel. The reality, though, is that this oil is just going to get there either via truck transport, which is environmentally worse than the pipeline, or replaced by oil from the North Sea, which has higher potential environmental impact, or with coal....also higher environmental impact.

So all those against the pipeline are really against the environment, they just don't realize that.

There are those that are just against hydrocarbons, but, to quote Vonnegut, that's like being anti-glacier. The glacier is still there, and keeps sliding downhill, regardless of any who wish it wasn't there.

(ANTIMEDIA) Hanlontown, IA — Beginning around 5:30 am on Wednesday morning, local authorities in Hanlontown, Iowa, realized the Magellan Pipeline was leaking what amounted to 138,600 gallons of diesel fuel. KIMT in Iowa reported that emergency responders with the Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Worth/Mitchell County Emergency Management, and Freeborn County Emergency Management were all on the scene. The cause of the leak is still under investigation.

We agree here. If the world ran on natural gas instead of coal, there would be considerably less pollution. Furthermore, the US produced and transported oil, coal, and natural gas would be more environmentally friendly than Brazil, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, or Russia.

I am not strongly against this pipe project, although don't we have enough oil now?

Yes we do and refining the Canadian Sands oil is more expensive than refining oil from here.

Keystone isn't as economically viable as it was when first proposed.

    We just don't need it

Could someone really in the know explain why it took so long to start exploiting shale oil.

It seems fracking technology isn't new.

Imagine if Obama gave the greenlight in 2008 -- they'd have spent $7 billion to get it open just in time for the $30/barrel oil market. Oil sands can't compete at that price. They'd have taken as much of a financial hit by building it as they did by not being able to build it.

Wait... I thought it was keystone = profits. You mean there are less expensive energy sources and less expensive ways to transport?

Pgabs, I believe when horizontal drilling became cheaper and easier to do it really helped fracking take off. Being able to produce from a mile or more of payzone from a horizontally drilled we'll gives a helluva lot more oil than just a single vertical well.
