Is there a legit source or link that says Les is stopping Morey from starting the rebuilding process? I ask and made a new thread for the following reasons: 1) I posted this in other threads, but no one answered 2) The common perception on this board is to blame Les for this decision because if we lose....he doesn't make money 3) I am not a hater of Morey nor am I a supporter, but I feel like the Moneyball system doesn't work in league. I just simply want to know and clear this thing and blame the right person
14 years and one second round against the Lakers speak volumes..... Front Office and Ownership.... fail..... no excuses correct me if I am wrong
We're all guessing that's the case. Morey said in the summer, before the lockout, that it was Les Alexander's approach and that he agreed with it. http://rockets.clutchfans.net/1901/for-rockets-winning-2012-would-be-nice-losing-might-be-better/ Recently, JVG said that "Rockets ownership" didn't want to "get bad to get good."
As Clutch just posted, Jeff Van Gundy came out and said that Daryl basically had his hands tied. Les wants to rebuild without tanking.
Can't be too hard on Les though. If this were ANY other sport like NFL or MLB then this wouldn't hurt the franchise as much as it has. I wish the NBA would look into not punishing teams for wanting to be competitive. If the Lottery was a true lottery I think it would be better. Or At least give the 5 worst teams their top 5 picks and have a lottery among the rest of the non-playoff teams.
I guess Les doest realize that we will still show the same attendance numbers if we are getting to watch a young exciting product, instead of the SOS.
To be fair, this is really year 1 of the 'post Yao' rebuilding phase. While we had Yao, and while there was the faintest chance he would be healthy, we needed to try and surround him with complementary players. Now that's off the table, the rebuilding begins. Les/Morey - one or both want to do it while still winning. I wonder if that tune will change should we completely strike out at the trade deadline? The thing is, if they ever DO decide to go full blown tank mode, it's always a season of misery before you get that 'talent' to watch the following year.
Les don't won't to lose the value of his ball club that Yao Ming raised up and the two trophies that was gift wrapped to him by the previous owners...
Keep in mind though guys that Les & Morey were definitely on their way to making the kind of moves that it took to rebuild this franchise before the new CBA completely hindered their ability to take advantage of the old CBA. Something the Rockets really excelled at. Namely their ability to manage cap flexbility and contracts better than any other team in the NBA. Other teams got themselves well over the cap, and the Rockets were predatory in taking advantage of those situations. Under the contex of when Morey said this, they must still have believed they could make moves that they made before that take advantage of other teams making bad moves. Obviously thats not the case now, and GM's are actually learning how to properly manage a salary cap. The new CBA has NBA GM's going super conservative and everyone is preparing their salary situation to be under the lux tax within the next 3 years. The days were they pulled off deals like the T-Mac/Landry for Martin/Hill/1st round pick/pick swap are dead and gone. Teams wont be making deals like that under the new CBA. I assume that nobody in the front office, coaching staff, and even Les, will be happy with the outcome of this season if they end up with the 14th pick, and no star aquisition once again. Just like every other team had to make adjusments on the fly so will the Rockets. They are going to make some pretty outlandish, bold moves to try and aquire a key player here pretty soon to get something to build on. So hell or highwater they will do something other than stay the course. These guys are smart enough to realize that middle of the pack is not where they want to be. They might have the 14th pick again this year, but I have a hard time believing this kind of hampster wheel spin will continue beyond this year.
Yeah, keep in mind this was NOT the roster the Rockets were expecting to have going into this season. They were deadset on making moves before the season started and the Gasol deal was a done deal they were banking on. If the Gasol deal wasn't going to happen then I guarantee you they would have at least made a couple small moves as well to relieve some of the duplication on the roster.
I thought everything is suppose to be Tmac's fault! I mean he never led us out of the 1 at round. The fan ordered heiniken and got bud light. He broke his back He needs glasses... Which he never got
The time it took to make this (non) deal, remake this (non) deal and wait for clarity cost the Good Guys any opportunity to strike (fool's?) gold. I believe the effect of that (non) deal would have been such that this team would be home court in the p/o. Now? Frankly the pollyanna blind-fan that is moi believes that this week will be good to us (Rox fans). I believe I believe repeat after me, I be-lieve!
the owner of course...how I envy Dallas and the Lakers who will do anything at all cost just to help and make their team so much competitive..
with lowry out, Maury can run a covert tanking operation. All he has to do is trade Dragic and let flynn start.
