Saw the Eagles a few weeks ago and they put on a great show. Their music was still awesome. As awesome as the night was I couldn't help but think if they were just getting started out today with all of the same songs and all. Could they still be able to reach the same level of success? I'm not sure. That got me to thinking which bands of the 70's would be successful today with the same songs and all?

Other than Seven Bridges Road, the Eagles suck ass.

Joe Walsh made that band sound good, and the James Gang is better.

    The Eagles? I doubt it.

It isn’t a band, but David Bowie would still crush if he was just starting out.

Same with Joni Mitchell... another one that would be extremely popular is Elton John. A lot of the popular music out now is strongly influenced by him and his style.

In country music, Alabama would be very popular if they were coming out now.

Others that would do well now are The Alan Parsons Project, Queen, Genesis (Gabriel).

More obscure bands like Roxy Music, Nick Drake, Focus and Caravan.

Nick Drake would be a massive star today.

BTW I’ll take all of these bands or performers over The Eagles but everyone has different tastes.

These aren’t my favorite bands of the 70’s... just what I think would do well. For example Iggy Pop and Yes were awesome but wouldn’t play well now.

Steve Miller would do well in any time period...they just capture a certain age and attitude perfectly. There is no Dave Matthews Band without Steve Miller.

This is a pretty cool read, I had no idea he was such good buddies with Les Paul.

I've seen him 3 times at the Woodlands, hard to have a bad time. The milfs are ubiquitous. Kind of like a Tom Petty show.

Heavy metal still seems popular and there is one band that started it all that were also ahead of their time that I think would still be relevant today.
Indeed one of their members is still performing in his own band.
I should make this a trivia question - let's see how many if any know who I am referring to.

What ever happened with those guys...they were HUGE. Did they just get completely pissed off at each other?

This Parsons has gone to soon. He could be a country music megastar today.

They were together for 35 years and still will do reunion tours. They had a lot of big hits through the late 80’s but were not in tune with what was popular in the 90’s like Garth Brooks or even Clint Black or Alan Jackson. Their type of music has become popular again. You don’t hear as much about them now because most their stuff lacked the long term cross over appeal of Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash or even Charlie Daniels.

I also think Trump would give The Clash a lot of new material to work with.

The Magnificent Seven gives us a little hint of how The Clash could easily transition into political Hip Hop

Could be just me, but personally, hard to imagine a lot of GOAT musicians from the 60s and 70s with the power & quality of their music NOT being noticed and wanted so that they can quench the thirst of a majority of music (not pop idol) fans today.
