Are there any breeders in Houston that anyone would recommend or anywhere else that I can get a puppy from?

The shelter. You can find labs pretty easily. Shouldn't have to got to a breeder.

Labs can be found anywhere. Contact some shelters. Lab mixes are awesome too. I have a Lab/Dalmatian and he's the greatest dog ive ever had. Unique personality.

As others have stated, it's worth checking various shelters to save a life if you are willing to take the time.

You might find that rescued dogs have less hereditary issues and sweeter temperaments.

    Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah I would rather get one from the shelter! I'll be contacting some today. I'll be a first time owner and would like a young puppy which are usually harder to find at shelters?

Thought I'd be the first to suggest a shelter, but I'm glad I wasn't.

Check shelters, and save a life. Like napalm says, you might find a canine companion that isn't a GR or LR pup, that you really love.

Go to BARC Houston. They're fantastic. They spay/neuter the dogs, give them their shots that they currently need, and evaluate them for any pre-existing conditions. I got my 2nd dog from them and have been happy ever since. Most city/county ran shelters will try and mask problems the animals may have just to get them out the door to keep costs down. BARC doesn't do that. And if I remember correctly the adoption and all the med work only cost $75.

Got my lab a few years ago from Texas Faith labradors in Willis, Texas (20 minutes outside of the woodlands, about an hour from downtown)

Same here. I had a lab mix (they told us with cocker spaniel). Such a great dog. We all wanted to clone him.

Got him from the humane society.

When I get a dog again it will definitely be a lab

Agree with the suggestions of trying to get a rescue dog if possible. However, I've heard that it seems rescues are making it more and more difficult to actually adopt a dog these days, which is weird. For example, my parents are looking to adopt a 2nd dog, and got denied because when the rescue called their vet, they found that their dog had missed a few months of heartworm preventative meds over the course of the past 5 years.

My lady volunteers at the Montgomery County animal shelter. I will check with her to see if they have any pups or young adults.

Dealt with similar issues when dealing with rescues in the past as has my brother. Ridiculous.

That is really bizarre. I wonder if that's a state or local thing? I had no issues when I adopted earlier this year in Phoenix.

The rescues ask for way too much money also. Normally the adoption fees are 250-400 bucks.
