The authors suggest that the increases in deaths of despair are accompanied by a measurable deterioration in economic and social wellbeing, which has become more pronounced for each successive birth cohort. Marriage rates and labor force participation rates fall between successive birth cohorts, while reports of physical pain, and poor health and mental health rise.

Case and Deaton document an accumulation of pain, distress, and social dysfunction in the lives of working class whites that took hold as the blue-collar economic heyday of the early 1970s ended, and continued through the 2008 financial crisis and the subsequent slow recovery.

 

When black people have complained about lack of opportunities or bad schools or whatever else, they are just told to suck it up and work harder and it's just their own fault. I assume our conservative friends here would argue the solution is the same for working class white people, yes?

Holding their nose and sucking it up in order to vote for a despicable douchebag president has been an grueling and ongoing trial for many white people.

 

The feeling of entitlement is the issue that's hurting white people in Middle America the most. They lost the values of working hard and getting smarter in the last couple of decades. To bring it back to the OP's topic, that's why uneducated whites are suffering more than other demographic groups lately, in many forms of living standards.

Meanwhile it's the engine of the GOP to perpetuate blame on to someone else, not focus on these traditional values, and then make their rich constituents richer. You want to point blame at Trump supporters or say they should be embarrassed, but in reality, it's hard to not feel a lot of pity for them. It's like watching a brat getting raised by trashy parents. The children are just a result of their environment.

Where have all the white people gone? Not West Oaks Mall. I stepped foot in there last weekend for the first time since 1996, simply out of curiosity since I was near the Energy Corridor. Holy hell has that place changed.

 

In this instance, it would be better to #bemorelikeEurope. It seems having robust social programs ranging from healthcare to job training helps.
