The 3fg shot almost always produces more efficiency and points per shot than the 2fg. Not to mention, which is almost always forgotten and very important is it spreads the floor which increases the efficiency of the 2fg and allows more access to the lane and free throws. The Houston Rocket shoot the 3fg more than any team in the league at 26.4 a game (http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/three-pointers-attempted-per-game) or as Grantland put it "About 34.7 percent of the Rockets' field goal attempts this season have been 3-pointers, putting Houston just behind the record-setting 35.4 percent share the Knicks put up last season." However they have been exceptionally average at converting this attempts. Connecting only 35.0 % as of 12/29/13 (http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/three-point-pct). Thats good for 17th in the league. Of those 26.4 attempts Harden shoots the most 3fg at 6.2 attempts a game but only converts only 0.309%, Garcia shoots the second most at 4.3 a game and only converts 0.343% and with the third most attempts Beverly shoots 4.2 a game and converts only a paltry 0.333%. All three of the Rockets leading 3fg shooters convert less the rough league average of 0.353 %. If the team as a whole was to convert at the same rate as the league leading percentage of the Portland Trailblazers of 0.404% (http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/three-point-pct) those 26.4 attempts would net 4.276 more points a game. For a team that understands the importance of the 3fg more than maybe any other in the league and acquires talent to address this skill set this is befuddling. The Rockets have done advanced research and development in a way that has never been done by having their D-league affiliate run an offense that overwhelming relies on the 3fg. ( http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/10148890/the-reliance-3-pointer-whether-not-hurting-nba) This begs the question. What's wrong? Is it just a slump? Slow start? Team adjusting to new pieces? Team adjusting to the scheme? Decrease due to over reliance? Bad shooters? Overrated shooters? Bad scheme?
Is it just a slump? Yes Slow start? Yes Team adjusting to new pieces? Yes Team adjusting to the scheme? No Decrease due to over reliance? Yes Bad shooters? No Overrated shooters? No Bad scheme? No Also I would add - Opponents adjustments Heavy schedule Injuries
Harden takes bad 3's Garcia,Casspi, and Lin are good but not great. Jones and Beverly aren't good shooters.
Sooner or later teams are going to figure out TJones hasn't made a single 3pt shot in the last four games.
I thought parsons and lin are doing good in shooting the 3s. However, that's not their specialty so I guess it doesn't matter much compare to Garcia. Garcia has been in a really bad slump and we really need him to pick it up and getting those 3s in.
He's been in a terrible slump this season. I don't believe anybody on this team is shooting 40 percent from 3 other than Brooks, and he doesn't score that much ALL the time. Kyle Korver and Marco Bellineli are sharpshooters.
Nothing. Where would we be if we replaced a large chunk of our 3s with midrange shots? And keep in mind that the people taking those midrange shots wouldn't be Tony Parker or Kyrie Irving, it'd be Francisco Garcia and Omri Casspi. We'd probably be a lot closer to .500 than we are now. Our biggest problem are that Harden & Bev have slumped on jumpshots, and Garcia is trash. Delfino was a knucklehead sometimes but he was also a really, really good elbow 3pt shooter which is hard to find.
Sigh. All of this talk amounts to nothing. 35% from three point land is like shooting 52.5% from 3 feet to 24 feet. Very few players and no team even comes close to that mark. And what is the difference between 35% and a really excellent mark from beyond the arc? Three or four more made shots per 100? Two or three points per game. In the grand scheme of things it is a nit.
it's not going in. In my Maury app that i downloaded, it tells me that drop in 3s are also killing some assists! something must be done soon or it will all end.
Garcia looks kinda tired.. Must be the Houston sludge vibe catching up to him after many years in laid back NorCal
4 more points a game is huge especially when its just from just one area of improvement and it would also increase the efficiency of other areas.
