My initial reaction is always stand pat.. but trading for Realmuto without giving up Tucker, Alvarez or James would be a no-brainer.

Yeah, my own take is probably the same.

I'd likely order them as follows:

    1) Realmuto
    2) Stand pat
    3) Harper
    4) Keuchel

And don't get me wrong, if we signed Harper tomorrow, I'd be ecstatic. The only one of these I don't like as an option is Keuchel.

    If possible,
    Harper first.
    If not that, then Keuchel.
    Stand pat.

Harper would demand 40 million for that short of a deal.

    So stand pat.

Only way I would sign Harper is if I have discussed an extension with Springer and Correa and my gut feeling is we won’t be able to sign them. I would much rather have those two than Harper long term, but If I’m Luhnow and I do t think that is going to happen, I’d sign Harper if I could to guarantee another high end player for several years. Also would make next year offense stupid good

Main thing is to sign Keuchel at that number. Wouldn’t be so much that it would interfere with Springer/Correa long term, and would solidify this years rotation. 3 no doubt legit pitchers plus McHugh, Miley and the kids sounds a lot more like a championship level staff than 2 plus those guys.

I’m not sure I understand why you use this test on Correa and Springer to gauge whether to sign Harper, but you don’t use the same test on Verlander and Cole to gauge whether or not to sign Keuchel (and this only holds water if you think Keuchel is still the ace of a rotation).

I would love to see Harper here! He’s one of my favorite players if not my favorite player currently. That being said getting Realmuto without having to give up Tucker or any of our top prospects would be fantastic. I still think we could use some bullpen arms and obviously a starting pitcher as well. Gio Gonzalez is still out there right?

I don’t think Keuchel is an Ace, and wouldn’t pay him like an Ace either

    Also

Long term I wouldn’t hand out, and don’t think Luhnow will hand out, long term high money deals for arms. 3 years ain’t likely to get Cole signed. Would love a 2 year extension on Verlander but that has nothing to do with anything I posted

If you give Keuchel 57 mill+, it definitely impacts what you are able to offer Verlander. I’m not sure how you don’t see this connection.

That kind of money to anyone impacts everyone we might want to retain or extend, not just Verlander.

There are players that may be worth that sacrifice. I just dont put DK with that pricetag on that list.

    This.

DK is a solid middle of the rotation starter. He isn’t anything more than that.

I’d cut off guaranteed money for Keuchel lower than that, 38 for two plus an option. They could easily do that and extend Verlander, he is already signed for this year, would be looking at 2 more with both at most

My post that he responded to was about long term decisions, that’s why I would only sign Harper IF I didn’t think I could sign Springer and Correa. Long term, not 2 years. They are different, if they weren’t, Harper and Machado would be signed already

How many pitchers threw 200 innings of a mid 3s era last year?

A lot of people are acting like those guys grow on trees

I hope the large majority of people on here that aren’t worried about our staff are correct. It just scares the crap out of me to have two guys in our rotation that don’t have major question marks.

Anything beyond 1 year year offer affects the potential Verlander extension. We are going to have a busy offseason next year. We will need every dollar we can get. DK isn’t the one to invest that kind of $ into anymore.

Ok, my post was about signing Harper only if we didn’t feel we could sign Springer and Correa LONG TERM, guarantee another stud LONG TERM

I fully understand you feel our pitching is great and you don’t want Keuchel back

I was referring to Harper, Correa and Springer and the LONG TERM outlook of the team

For the record, 6 pitchers in mlb threw more innings with a better era than Keuchel last year. That follows a year with a sub 3 era.

If he gets long term ACE money then I agree I’m out on that

But the general assumption that he will be easy to replace boggles my mind. On top of Morton and Lance being gone also
