Which of these definitions do you think best captures how voters should cast their MVP vote?

    (1) most value added on best team

    (2) best player on best team

    (3) most value added on a top 4 team

    (4) best player on top 4 team

    (5) most value added on a playoff team

    (6) best player on a playoff team

    (7) most value added on any team

    (8) best player on any team

For the above, you may interpret "most value added" and "best player" in the following way:

    1. most value added: most wins added to team versus if the player's minutes were replaced by an average player at his position

    2. best player: if you could pick any player when constructing your team for a playoff run, who would be the first player you pick?

If none of the above definitions are satisfactory, share your own.

Should have been a poll. I think by now there are 3 generally accepted standards for MVP:
    1. Best player on the best team (Dirk, Rose)
    2. "Best" overall player (Lebron, Shaq, TD) usually based on stats and/or rep
    3. Most "impactful" player (Nash, Kobe, Iverson) usually player who made the most difference on his team this is generally just based on hype.

And then there is Westbrick who is just a disgrace of an MVP. He got his MVP primarily because of the triple double hype, the KD WB storyline and the general hate for Harden by the media.

Who is picked depends on the season, the voters are consistently inconsistent about their standards.

I think your MVP can't fit only one criteria, like best player on a team with best record. If Harden and Greek Freak maintain current stats throughout the season and Bucks gets 2nd seed in front of Celtics in East while Rockets are 1st seed, who do you give it to? Giannis would achieve more with less in a competitive Eastern conference, while Rockets are first with a stacked team.

And they shift the meaning of MVP to accommodate for that.

So that corresponds to options (2), (7), and (8) in my original post. Do you have a preference among those 3? Or consider all three, possibly weighting them differently?

I think Westbrook fits into some combination of (7) and (8) according to how his voters perceived him.

Half the people responding are describing how they think the MVP gets voted.

That's not the intended question. What would you like to see the MVP vote be based on?

Best player in the league; BUT I don't think you can be the best player in the league on a bad team

It's become a bullshit award. Players like Westbrook and Harden are sabotaging team wins to up their stats. Harden goes for matador steals and sags off his man from the 3 point line to grab rebounds or drags his feet halcourt to spam assist Ariza or Ryno.

A non-playoff team for sure, maybe a lower seeded playoff team.

Well yadayada, people kept saying beards boring, flailing his arm etc to get to the line where he scored most of his points from. Lazy or no D played.
Uninspiring play unlike kd,brick and stephanie ....

Harden rule was created for that and hes still averaging 9 free throws per.

Whats their excuses now this year to deny him from? Getting Cp3 :rolleyes:o_O

Best player on a very good regular season team with about 60 wins/ top 3 seed in the league taking the supporting cast into account. Harden was the MVP last year.

Lebron hasn’t won it in years depite being the best player for a while because this 50 ish win bullshit isn’t enough with the 2 allstars he had around him. This year he has a case tho.
