While this is purely speculation, I feel it's a pretty important speculation as far as Martin's success in Houston goes. Now, I have liked Martin for a while from an offensive perspective; a solid field goal percentage and particularly a solid effective field goal percentage are something that too many high-scoring guards in today's NBA are lacking. I don't feel it does your team a huge amount of good to score 30 points a game if you fire up 30 shots to get there. Holding this viewpoint made me a pretty huge fan of Martin throughout his impressive '05-'08 breakout performance run. As he was expected to carry more offensive volume (particularly after the departure of Artest) his percentages dipped slightly, as you would expect. Still, he was a very efficient offensive player until this year. This year, for whatever reason, he has been abysmal by his own standards during his time with Sacramento.

You hear everyone blaming it on his chemistry with Tyreke. I can see that; Evans dominates the ball and eats up a lot of the possessions that Martin was previously using to get himself easy shots via running plays for Martin. On the other hand, Martin had some pretty poor shooting nights before he was injured and Reke came into his own; he shot about 40% before he was injured, and is shooting about 40% since returning.

So I'm curious what the feeling is here...was it just not Kevin's year in Sacramento, or is he on the decline? As a Rocket this year, will he return to shooting an excellent percentage for a guard, or will he continue at the pace he was setting as a King?

My personal feeling is that, based on watching Martin's offensive skills over the last five years, he still absolutely has it in him to pump the FGP back up to the 45% level. In reality, we may see a more typical-wing-player percentage of 43-44%, but I feel that in Houston's system he can certainly do much better than the 40% he's managed in Sacramento. Incidentally, screw his performance tonight; that's no indicator whatsoever, but did make me think about this issue.

FG%, eFG%, and shots per game respectively by year:
    Code:
    2004-05 .385 .406 2.6
    2005-06 .480 .540 7.6
    2006-07 .473 .533 13.3
    2007-08 .456 .515 15.0
    2008-09 .420 .491 15.9
    2009-10 .398 .456 15.4

Hmmm. Best guess is .358 based on a gut feeling. I love the way the guy plays though. Hope I'm not right.

43% This year only because of his first half struggles.

Next year with Yao he will EXPLODE.

Rockets shooting disease and the fact that he's on the decline this season is terrible news.

Honestly Artest shot 45% on the kings before he joined the rockets..People expecting martin to shoot well are going to be in for a surprise the rest of the season.

It looks like he's going to shoot under .200, he's on the decline, he's 27, that's too old.

why is that stupid? He has been shooting under .400 this season. Saying he will continue to do no better when trying to fit into a new system is quite reasonable.

With a post threat drawing away attention: 46% easily
    This season: 42%

It'll be better than Trevor Ariza, and incidentally, Trevor Ariza's own FG% will go up now that Kevin Martin is here to shoulder the scoring load.

He's 27 and on the decline? Man the NBA better renounce its one year removed from high school to be drafted rule and we better start drafting middle school kids.

That guy wasn't saying his percentages were going down because he's in a new system.

He was saying Martin is on the decline.

A 27 year old on the decline? That's unheard of. Well, maybe not for a certain player that used to be around...

well factually he is on the decline.

07-08 he played in 61 games, next year was 51, this year will be less.In the same years his FG% went from .456, .420 to .398

In what universe is that not DECLINING?

Well, scoring is really the only thing he does well. If he shoots below 40% all season he would be a bad player. Like a poor defending Trevor Ariza bad.

no problem with his shooting. just as long as he gets the ball more in the 4th quarter. I really question his defense

This comparsion is not a good sign. Because Brooks like tyreke, is really not a pg but a sg... 2 shooting guards in one lineup spells disaster. Need lowry to start.
