The Rockets are a really good team, but they can also make some moves to improve depth and improve their chances of going far in the playoffs.

Here are some of my ideas:

Trade Asik and Lin for a 1st round pick, possibly to Cleveland at #9
Go after Carmelo Anthony in Free Agency
Get a new head coach, George Karl
Drop worthless players and gain cap space: Omri Casspi, Jordan Hamilton, etc.
Pick up some free agents who will add to the team: Mario Chalmers, Kostas Papanikolaou from Greece (we own rights), a backup to Melo and/or Parsons

What should the Rockets do this offseason?

I mostly agree with you, except Asik. I think we still need him next year.

    Coach.

i wouldnt be mad if we kept our team the way it is and just added some role players. obviously everyone is going to be begging for melo but if we don't get him it isn't like we wont have a shot next year. bottom line: we win this series if the coach was decent. mchale is just not good enough

Asik and Lin proved they have a lot of worth to this team. Because of the poison pill, we should keep both unless we can get suitable replacements. Lin should be easier to replace..but Asik?

Trade Parsons, Lin, and Asik. Carmelo is a done deal we just have to pick up some tough defensive stoppers for Small forward and the bench. If we drop McHale we need to pick up Stan Van or George Karl, but I think if we hire really good assistants for McHale we will be fine. The main problem is lake of toughness and defense in the top 8.

    Coach
Decide what to do with Parsons
    Trade Asik because he's unhappy.
Try to trade Lin (hahahaha, good luck with that)
    Upgrade the one and two.
    Find a junk yard dog.
    More shooters.

Get rid of McHale and bring in a new coach. One who will emphasize defense. That alone will add a few wins, get us a higher seed, and allow us to close games in the playoffs. Next step is to decide whether to go all in on next season or hold off til 2015 with regard to cap space. I guess that'll come down to whether or not the Rockets have a realistic shot at Carmelo.

    Trade Asik....?? WTF

and go for Melo so we can become the worst defensive team in the league.

no what you need is veteran coach, veteran defensive players (battier) and starting PF caliber player.

There are tradeoffs between offense and defense that have to be made. An elite coach can teach good team defense; Van Gundy did it with a relatively poor Rockets defense. Carmelo adds yet another dimension to the offensive side of the ball that I believe compensates for struggles on defense.
