What if we had picked up Kenyon Martin when we had the chance?

Would we be a better team with K-Mart?

  1. Of course, he's a significant upgrade over all our 4's!

  2. Nah, he wouldn't have made a difference.

He's having a solid season with the Knicks, good rebounder and very tough defender, can guard the PnR and his offensive game is decent. It's no secret the 4 spot on our team is a black hole at the moment and McHale is playing power forward by committee.

K-Mart got picked up on a 10 day contract at the end of February, and obviously hindsight is 20/20 but let's say when Morey made the trade for T-Robb, he thought D-Mo and T-Robb probably needed more time before they were NBA ready and gave K-Mart a look and brought him in as a placebo instead of Aaron Brooks or Ohlbrecht. Are we a better team and if so, how much better?

Everyone passed on him for chemistry reasons. He's a nice player but you have the youngest team and it's coming along nicely. You could seriously mess something up if you start adding guys like K-Mart. A veteran team can take that chance, especially one that was getting desperate like the Knicks and that has Jason Kidd who kept K-Mart in check before.

Kenyon Martin, Carmelo, and J.R. Smith are close friends going back to their Denver Nuggets days. There is a familiarity between those 3. I'm sure that had something to do with him signing with the Knicks over all other teams.

he would certainly add a level of toughness that is somewhat lacking, esp on the defensive end. You do not want to come down the lane and get hacked by kenyon. he's one of the biggest reasons for this knick turn around.

no we dont need him at all. one of the main focuses of this team is to develop its young players. we started the season with a bunch of young bigs and its the same at the end of the season. we dont need them to be perfect. adding veterans cuz they lack rebounding or defense or w/e wont help them in the long run.

he's doing ok in new york but nothing special. wouldnt make much of a difference here.

The one good thing about our power forward situation right now is that, no matter who McHale plays, the minutes being used there will serve to develop the young talent the team has (well, except Delfino) -- and the team is winning games at the same time.

If they had KMart he would be decreasing the development time and potential contributions from 2 of Jones, Donatus and Robinson. Since the team is winning games as such anyway, this decrease in the development of two of the three PF's would be needless.

If we get a long term solution or a major impact player at the 4, then it would be worth it to sacrafice the young 4's on the team -- but Martin is nether a major contributor or a long term solution --so we are better off without him.

We'd have more tattoos on the team.

Then we'd move from a 1% chance of winning the title to a 1.1% chance, and we'd hurt the development of half our team via minutes.

Kenyon Martin is a guy you get when you're DONE building and developing your team. Not right at the beginning when you assemble a team.

He isn't putting up numbers any better than our 4s. He is old, and I'd rather our young players get better.

I really don't understand the point of this thread. If he was putting up 15/8 or something spectacular maybe you have a point, but he is 7/5, with loads of fouls and TOs.

Hurt our development? If anything he would show our rookies a few things to stay in the league. Dmo especially could learn some things from Kenyon Martin. Defense is one of them

At some point, we need at least one, preferably two to three, big guys who will take hard fouls and stand up for the team when are guys get pushed around (e.g. Lin gets hard fouls to his head, illegal screens, etc.). KMart would be one. Maybe we can wait until we are in contention to get these guys, but this has got to be on the checklist. I'm of the opinion that we should get one now to teach our younger guys how to play team ball in that respect.

agreed. most definitely low risk, decent reward there. give him a 10-day, if it works, it works, if not, you're out a few pennies.

i think we can agree that delfino's veteran "leadership" as well as garcia's have been positive for this team.

I understand the argument of things such as, we already have 4 PF's vying for PT, kmart would only marginally (if that) improve the roster, he could cause locker room issues...

but i think at this point in the season knowing you can compete with the best teams in the west, it would a small gamble with big upside since kmart does have playoff experience, and would come in knowing his role and not making rookie mistakes.

i read he also is trying to play back into the league so he's got a chip on his shoulder

I was all for him but it seemed a lot of people despise him simply because of his attitude. That is something we need on this team.

If we had him, we would suck to the point everyone thought we would.
