I just heard about this recently and was looking it up not too long ago. The name of their cause is called "pro-ana" as in pro-anorexia. Apparently they wear red beaded bracelets so they can identify each other. The few sites I looked at were pretty disturbing.

I remember stumbling onto a pro-ana and pro-mia (bulimia) discussion board a long time ago; it was just freaky. This has been going on for a while. I didn't know about the red bracelets, though you can probably identify them just as well by the bones-stretched-over-skin appearance. Somehow they come to identify with their disease and don't want to get better; they want to wallow in it and even compete with each other to be the thinnest. I know I might not seem sympathetic, and I can't understand the motivation behind it, but it is such disordered thinking and they get angry if anyone tries to help.

Do they really think it makes them beautiful? Nobody would hit that.

All of a sudden my overweight body doesn't seem so bad. Not ideal, but could be much worse. At least it is still strong and healthy.
