A moon rock given to the Dutch prime minister by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969 has turned out to be a fake.

    Published: 12:12AM BST 29 Aug 2009
A piece of moon rock was given during a goodwill tour by the three apollo 11 astronauts.

Curators at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, where the rock has attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year, discovered that the "lunar rock", valued at £308,000, was in fact petrified wood.

Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation, said the museum would continue to keep the stone as a curiosity.

"It's a good story, with some questions that are still unanswered," she said. "We can laugh about it."

The rock was given to Willem Drees, a former Dutch leader, during a global tour by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin following their moon mission 50 years ago.

    J. William Middendorf, the former American ambassador to the Netherlands, made the presentation to Mr Drees and the rock was then donated to the Rijksmuseum after his death in 1988.

"I do remember that Drees was very interested in the little piece of stone. But that it's not real, I don't know anything about that," Mr Middendorf said.

Nasa gave moon rocks to more than 100 countries following lunar missions in 1969 and the 1970s.

The United States Embassy in The Hague is carrying out an investigation into the affair.

Researchers Amsterdam's Free University were able to tell at a glance that the rock was unlikely to be from the moon, a conclusion that was borne out by tests.

"It's a nondescript, pretty-much-worthless stone," said Frank Beunk, a geologist involved in the investigation.

No, not faked but I'm sure the conspiracy guys will go nuts over this one rock, disregarding that 'over 100 countries' received moon rocks.

The earth is flat. The sun revolves around the earth. The moon is really just a bad case of swamp gas. And we should have never left the gold standard.

The CIA killed Jimi Hendrix. Staring at the sun is good for your eyes.

Fun to talk about, but not true.

The funny thing about this thread is that the reason they could tell that this "moon rock" was fake was....

because they have real moon rock examples for comparison!

If anything, it provides proof that the moon landings were real.

BTW, below is the fake moon rock:

Even I know enough to know that a moon rock isn't reddish brown.

Exactly. Anyone with a grain of sense could see that that rock is from Mars.

Some moon rocks are known to have relatively high concentrations of Fe, which would result in a reddish brown color. . .Providing oxidation takes place..

All of the moon rocks I've seen that were brought back have been plain gray basalt, like the following moon rocks:

Agreed, I have never seen any red moon rocks. Just saying that there is iron on the moon so its not out of the question.

but i agree that this almost does more for the pro reality camp

What about the book named Dark Mission:The Secret History of NASA?I think it reveals some unknown facts that there's something existing on the moon, maybe that's why Amstrong's unwillingness to come forward and talk to the public.

BTW,I still think the moon landing was real, apollo 11 did sky'ed into the orbit then landed on the Moon.
