[rquoter]Warner to help block his own resolution on Iraq

By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
February 3, 2007

Sen. John W. Warner will join his fellow Republicans in voting Monday to block the resolution he wrote rebuking President Bush's Iraq war policy.

"Senator Warner supports the Senate Republican leadership's effort to establish a free and open debate on Iraq on the Senate floor, including possible amendments," a spokesman for the Virginia Republican said yesterday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Warner told colleagues during a closed-door strategy meeting at the Library of Congress that he opposes the manner in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, is conducting debate on his resolution, which condemns Mr. Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.

Senate Republicans are opposed to a vote on the Warner resolution unless they also get votes on two other resolutions. One of those alternatives supports Mr. Bush's plan, and the other would prohibit cutting funds for the war. Republicans also want each resolution to require 60 votes to pass.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, told reporters yesterday that he expects to have all 49 Republicans in the chamber -- nine votes more than are needed for a filibuster -- to vote Monday to block the nonbinding resolution.

Mr. Reid said he has been acting in good faith to get a vote on the Warner resolution.

"The American people deserve better than a filibuster on the president's flawed plan," he said. "Senate Democrats will continue to negotiate with the Republican leadership to bring the plan to a vote." [/rquoter]

In basso's world the only courageous move is to support Bush, no matter how badly he screws up. Anything less amounts to abandoning the troops and emboldening terrorists.

basso: You're in luck. One of the troops has returned from Iraq and posted in your thread about "supporting the troops all the way." Maybe you could drop by that thread again to tell him he's on the enemy's side now and isn't supporting himself properly. That would be courageous.

Doesn't really seem courageous to vote against your own resolution. Idiotic, maybe?

...

Schizophrenic, perhaps?

Good! It was a worthless resolution.

But it shows me all I need to know about Warner and his ilk in congress.

Here's the list of Senators up for reelection next year who voted to filibuster the measure -- and hence voted to use the filibuster to in essence protect the President's escalation policy:

Senator John Warner (R-VA)
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR)
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
Senator Thad Cochran (R-MI)
Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM)
Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK)
Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS)
Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO)
Senator David Vitter (R-LA)
Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY)
Senator Larry Craig (R-ID)
Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK)

According to the Senate's Web site, GOPers John McCain and Mel Martinez missed the vote.

In fairness, the Dems did the same thing with the Supreme Court Justice nominations amongst other things.

yes, i do, and it's nice to see the MSM parroting the harry reid spin machine. warner and his gop cohorts deserve all the opprobrium they get for their supremely pointless act in drafting the resolution in the first place.

of course- the republicans aren't trying to "block debate." they're arguing to keep the debate going and to look at other (equally pointless) resolutions. harry pelosi wants to end debate and vote on this resolution.

they all suck.

I couldn't be happier than this. The Democrats try to pass a meaningless, completely political statement, and the Republicans get all uppity, decide to block this meaningless resolution. The only thing they are doing is keeping so-called progress from happening. With any luck, they'll keep fighting until the budget is needed, and the government will shut down. The only way this could be better is if Teddy Kennedy hadn't changed the rules and we could watch John Cornyn give big speeches about polishing his boots on C-SPAN.

The Honorable Harry Reid, Majority Leader

The Honorable Mitch McConnell, Republican Leader

The Honorable Richard Durbin, Assistant Majority Leader

The Honorable Trent Lott, Assistant Republican Leader

United States Senate -- Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Leader Reid, Leader McConnell, Senator Durbin and Senator Lott:

The war in Iraq is the most pressing issue of our time. It urgently deserves the attention of the full Senate and a full debate on the Senate floor without delay.

We respectfully advise you, our leaders, that we intend to take S. Con. Res 7 and offer it, where possible under the Standing Rules of the Senate, to bills coming before the Senate.

On January 10,2007, the President stated, with respect to his Iraq strategy, "if Members have improvements that can be made, we will make them. If circumstances change we will adjust." In a conscientious, respectful way, we offered our resolution consistent with the President's statement.

We strongly believe the Senate should be allowed to work its will on our resolution as well as the concepts brought forward by other Senators. Monday's procedural vote should not be interpreted as any lessening of our resolve to go forward advocating the concepts of S. Con. Res. 7.

We will explore all of our options under the Senate procedures and practices to ensure a full and open debate on the Senate floor. The current stalemate is unacceptable to us and to the people of this country.

Sincerely,

Olympia Snowe

John Warner

Chuck Hagel

Susan Collins

Norm Coleman

Gordon Smith

George Voinovich

Furthermore, the reason given by the GOP leadership as reasons to quash the discussion now seems to have been blown out of the water.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...7/AR2007020702550.html?nav=rss_print/asection

A top Pentagon leader weighed in yesterday on the war debate and appeared to undercut the argument advanced by the White House and many GOP lawmakers that a congressional debate challenging the Bush plan would hurt troop morale.

"There's no doubt in my mind that the dialogue here in Washington strengthens our democracy. Period," Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified before the House Armed Services Committee. He added that potential enemies may take some comfort from the rancor but said they "don't have a clue how democracy works."
