FlyerFanatic- A VPN is merely a secure 'tunnel' to an exit point in another location. It shouldn't effect worldwide services like torrent very much.

What it would effect is something like a VoIP (internet phone) service that probably needs to be on the ISP network to work. When you use a VPN at the router level, you're effectively leaving the network for all forms of traffic.

If you want your VoIP to work at the router level, you're going to have to turn off the VPN when you want to use it.

You never said why you got VPN in the first place. If it was just to mask specific traffic types like torrent, you can set up a dedicated PC or NAS and just install the VPN service on there and have just that PC on the VPN, which would leave the rest of your network accessing the ISP network, which would allow your VoIP service to work.

Here's an example of the type of NAS device I was speaking of. I own one and they're fantastic.

can you explain this a little more?

currently i have the VPN on my main desktop computer...i do have a laptop laying around.

if i uninstall the VPN from my main desktop and then install it on the laptop, the laptop could run the VPN, while my PC using the wired internet would still allow access to VoIP service?

    that correct?
