He could've been both... Forgot how he helplessly backed Theo Ratliff into that furious "posterized" dunk his rookie year...?

Precisely correct. Becoming an effective NBA player entails utilizing one's strengths as often as possible. Weaknesses warrant improvement, but they should never be used as a deterrent to what a particular player does best. Yao was much more effective playing close to the basket than he was playing on the perimeter. Might he have become a better ball-handler given the opportunity. Perhaps. But Jeff Van Gundy recognized that Yao was more likely to be successful playing close to the basket. He was never going to be Chris Webber- a frontcourt player with the ball-handling and passing skills of a guard- something Van Gundy recognized and sought to keep out of his game.

Fans who believe Van Gundy's decision to streamline Yao's game made the latter a lesser player aren't seeing the full picture.

While I don't agree with what the guy you're replying to said, I have taken offense at what you said. It's the other way round, NBA fans aren't taken seriously, you're just so US-centric you don't realize there's a world outside of your country.

Didn't know where else to put it. Absolutely crazy finish.

Btw, Planinić played for the Nets from 2003-06 and had a similar buzzer-beater there.
