I was watching Haven and know that it is coming to an end While it has been under the radar it was at least a decent show I started thinking about all the good to great shows that SyFy had made So I was wondering which ones made you list? I am also wondering what happened. . .some drop off has been brutal [I don't care much for 12 monkeys or Helix really - they just on] BattleStar Galactica, Stargate stick out for me but . . . .i am sure there are others Rocket River
SyFy is, overall, too "campy". that's my main problem with it. Sometimes "campy" entertainment is useful. Doesn't require lots of thought to enjoy watching an episode. But it won't go down as "great". The problem with the shows that desire to go a little further is, when they don't work, they can be either bad, or get pretty bad ratings. But when it works, you get something like Battlestar Galactica, which was amazing (despite what you think of the last season(s)).
The first season of Twelve Monkeys was pretty good, but watching a series on that channel forces you to see endless reminders via advertising of the other terrible shows they have. Helix started strong... was interesting... but got worse as it went on. Still was watchable.
Battlestar Galactica was stinkin' great; my favorite SciFi show in TV history. That says a lot considering I am a Trekkie.
BattleStar Galactica, Stargate Franchise, Farscape are the high watermark for SyFy; there isn't going be anything better than those shows. There are some shows past and present that are really good though. Currently Airing: Lost Girl - This show is ending this year but is surprisingly good. 12 monkeys Dark Matter Kill Joys No longer Airing Shows that were pretty good: Alphas Continuum Eureka - This was a GREAT show. Funny and light but heavy sci-fi Sanctuary - The first couple seasons were really good Warehouse 13 Future Shows that I am excited about. The Expanse Childhood's End
Childhood's End is a great novel from the late Arthur C. Clarke, a science fiction legend. Published in 1953, it still holds up very well, in my humble opinion. Clarke is the cat who used ideas in his novels that eventually left the realm of fiction and became reality. An example? He came up with the idea for a satellite communication system in 1945. 1945! Childhood's End had quite an impact, getting terrific reviews from the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, very unusual for a work of science fiction, especially in the early 1950's. Much later, Pink Floyd had a song, Childhood's End, on the album Obscured by Clouds that was inspired by the novel. I'm looking forward to the mini-series. I first read it sometime during the 1950's and still have my copy. Fingers crossed that they don't **** it up.
Currently Airing: Lost Girl - Could never get into this one 12 monkeys - Could never get into this one Dark Matter - Kill Joys Dark Matter is great . . . Kill Joys is ok but not great. Waiting to see what it becomes No longer Airing Shows that were pretty good: Alphas - i really liked this show Continuum - could never get in to it Eureka - agreed Sanctuary - agreed Warehouse 13 - solid show I'd ad Defiance. I only got into it the last season Future Shows that I am excited about. The Expanse Childhood's End- Agreed
Well, now that's just silly. These are the people that gave you Chupacabra vs. The Alamo and Return of the Living Dead: Rave from the Grave, so I'm not sure your little '70's pew-pew spacelazers! remake makes the cut.
Agreed! I think I picked up this book many years ago for a 50cents. It was great! It's the reason I'm excited for the series.
I only tolerated Defiance. You picked a good season. I thought the final season was the best out of the bunch. I was bored to tears during it's run. It should have been much MUCH better.
My grandma gave me this book when I was 8 years old. I still have that book as well. It is hands down my favorite science fiction work of art. I find myself consumed with an approaching sense of dread for the SyFy series because this novel (like Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land) appears to be unfilmable. It's just too complex to translate to the visual confines of television (how do you properly show all of the earth's children as they transform). From what little I've seen, it looks like the producers ripped off visuals from both Torchwood's Children Of Man and Wil Smith's Independence Day. My fingers are also crossed that they don't **** it up.
I remember watching Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Being Human. Stargate Universe season 2 was some of the best TV around imo. Alphas got cancelled just as soon as it got good. Killjoys and Dark Matter were ok this season. Need to watch The Expanse.
BSG is one of the best sci-fi shows ever. Stargate Universe was pretty good doesn't get much love, and it was similar in style to BSG. Still didn't deserve its early cancellation. I don't watch too much SyFy originals. Most of them are B-movie like writing and production but trying to be good. There are some gems, though. Expanse is getting lots of rave hype and I might give it a shot.
