I've always wondered if the US were serious why this hasn't been done before. I don't see this as 'the war on drugs'. I see it as a means to limit the power the cartels have accumulated. Why not take this on rather than a boots on the ground war in the Middle East? The Mexican president has already voiced his displeasure, but historically, the Mexican government can't do anything because they are so corrupt. I think it's about time. It's ridiculous that these cartels have gone unchecked for so long, so close to home.

Not a terrible move, but I would of gone the other way and let capitalism solve this problem.

The point of doing this is to open up legal loopholes under the Bush era policy that allows for interventions and surveillance that wouldn’t normally be legal without Congressional oversight.

All those who haven’t shut up about how Tulsi Gabbard is sooo right and their top pick to win the Dem nomination should be losing their sh$t about this but my nagging suspicion is they aren’t the least bit sincere about their feelings of foreign intervention.

I assume this is mostly politically motivated. Trump wants scalps for 2020 he can brag about. If he really cared about the drug problems in this country he’d be trying to take down the drug companies that get people unnecessarily hooked to begin with. Going after the new El Chapo is great, but let’s be honest about the real end game here.

Honestly I don’t have a strong opinion either way. I don’t think it changes the fact that Mexico is so corrupt and dependent on cartels for their economy that there is little the US can do. At this point about 40% of the land mass in Mexico is controlled by cartels and NOT the Mexican government.

Removing Chapo has done nothing except increase violence and the flow of drugs into the USA.

    It's not that complicated.

Pick one drug lord.... give him intelligence on his rival cartels and make him king. When he is done and takes over tell him to play nice or we will give the next guy intel on him and his operations.

You aren't stopping this drug train. Throwing special forces at this will cause a serious increase in violence in the near term and probably on this side of the border as well. You would be putting American tourists in real danger as the cartels will be looking for retribution. Border agents would also become likely targets.

I would have our forensic accountants digging into the finances of Mexican politicians. Start outing the corrupt leaders in a big public way all over the news. We have a wire tap of one Mexican state governor on the phone with El Chapo saying he will do anything for him. This stuff should be broadcasted loud and often. Then start freezing their assets... by the way, that is a big part of labeling them a terrorist organization. So they can go after the money easier.

Anybody ever ask why drugs are so 'wanted'?

Maybe we should address that issue.

So Trump will be on the brink of finishing off the drug cartels and then pull away the resources poised to take them out just like he did with ISIS?

Does this open the door for peace negotiations like we're going to have with the Taliban heroin cartels?

I'm sure Trump has more respect for El Chapo than he did for Sen. McCain. After all, El Chapo escaped a couple of times. :D (couldn't resist)

I consider the 'war on drugs' to be a seperate issue than the fight against the Cartels even though there is obviously some overlap. I'd rather see the U.S. aggressively take on this fight than get involved in another Afghanistan or Iraq. It seems like a no brainer to me. And yeah, there will be reprocussions as some mentioned above. But our inaction has led us to this point. Is there any upside to sitting back and not doing jack ****?

Sue for Peace w/ Eastasia, then Declare War w/ South Oceania. Is it cliche for using crank references to dystopian novels?

Because it's the holidays, how about the Matrix?
