I am not saying that other coaches couldn't have done better, I am simply saying that Whitsitt deserves just as much blame as Dunleavy because he gave him so many jerks to have to deal with... more than any coach should be expected to manage.

Let's look at Portland's situation in detail:

Wallace: totally out of control; head case on the court.
    Pippen: need I say anything?
Strickland: once a thug, always a thug, livin the thug life
    Kemp: fat-ass, coke-head, overpaid benchwarmer
Stoudamire: good PG, show little confidence in him by signing Rod.
    D. Davis: anybody notice him on the bench?
Sabonis: can barely make it up and down the floor
    S. Smith: former Dream Teamer, no longer the baller he once was
    Schrempf: brought out of retirement
    Augmon: who cares
Anthony: excellent defender relegated to 12th man role
    Wells: unavailable

What I'm saying is that this is an extremely volatile mix of thugs, idiots, and washed up All-Stars. Whitsitt should know better than to put together a team like this. A coaching staff of Vince Lombardi, John Wooden, and Dean Smith couldn't have coached this team, much less Mike D.
