He had some underrated stuff, too.

I liked the soundtrack for the movie "She's the One". The movie wasn't much, but Petty's music I liked. It went under the radar.

    He has a cover of a song by Beck, very slow and laconic, and if I'd read the name of the song before I played it I might not have laughed aloud so much at the chorus;

    "She'll do.......anythi-I-ing...........She'll do....any-thiiiiing..........She'll do......a-ny-thing.......to make you feeeeeeeeel like an a$$hole........."

What you do is take the basic idea of a song:

    And make it your own:

    Take a minor-key, slower song

And make it major and upbeat

I'm never really "moved" by celebrity deaths any more or less than other deaths.

That said, Tom Petty radio is one of my bookmarked stations on XM. Most everything I have bookmarked is sports.

    Alright for Now

Goodnight baby, sleep tight my love
May God watch over you from above
Tomorrow I'm workin' what would I do
I'd be lost and lonely if not for you
    So close your eyes
    We're alright for now
    I've spent my life travelin'
    Spent my life free
I could not repay all you've done for me
    So sleep tight baby
    Unfurrow your brow
    And know I love you
    We're alright for now
    We're alright for now

Listen to the Mudcrutch stuff, too. It’s fantastic, swampy, southern rock.

One of his lesser known songs, but it's great.

And my favorite Tom Petty song was always "Learning to Fly."

Learning to Fly was also one of my favourites after I became a Petty convert.

    Love this song of Petty's:

One guy I forgot to mention- Warren Zevon. If you're a fan of Tom Petty, chances are you'll dig Zevon. This reminds me of A Face in the Crowd (no hyperbole, "Reconsider Me" is really one of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my very humble but correct opinion :) :

Tom Petty taught me the meaning of a good album. When the last song is just as good as the others, but just not as popular... you made a good album. Finish strong. If you don't, you're not done.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Tom Petty was certainly in that category - you can listen to Damn The Torpedos from 1 to 9, and yes, we know the popular songs, but Century City and You Tell Me are just as good as Refugee and DDMLT. Those aren't "deep cuts" to me, I see those as equal cuts.

You know, you can sing along with Refugee, and Don't Do Me Like That, and Here Comes My Girl... but when you really want to pound the dashboard and just yell "AAAAAHHHH!!!", you turn to What Are You Doing In My Life or Century City:

I've probably seen this video more than any other in the world. For a while, this, and "Take on Me" were played as two of every ten or so videos shown with a ZZ Top video thrown in the mix, for good measure. Also "You Might Think" by the Cars was in the rotation. No a ton of room for other songs.
