Yeah, it's a poor move on Tillerson's part. It is not Trump standing by America's allies, it's the opposite.

You would think Trump would have Tillerson at least feign interest in NATO and its member states and such, rather than continuing to blow Putin, but Trump has always lived in his own reality; and, until the day it finally bites him on the ass, he'll believe himself impervious to takedown.

Pay up and we'll show up.

Our allies act like this is rocket science. No way to gage any one allie's commitment without such a system. Seeing how they are the ones most vulnerable to Russia, you'd figure they would be the ones most likely and most frequently to meet this commitment.

You haven't read the articles posted on how NATO works? It isn't like paying dues, and they behind on their payments. Perhaps reading those articles would help.

Also it isn't like we have NATO as a favor to those allies. We get every bit as much benefit from it as they do.

Next thing you know, Trump will disband NATO and pull out all the bases in Europe. :)

really good optics timing with the new Manafort-for-hire news breaking on the same day.
It is incredible arrogance, incredible indebtedness (to Russian entities), or just incredible stupidity.

    Take your pick.

LOL, at least Tillerson is finally making news and not as irrelevant as he has been generally?

No way this guy lasts 4 years.

I am more interested which fair and balanced journalist will be chosen to accompany Tillerson and report on this trip... Hannity? The trio from Fox and Friends?

No, and I don't care. I'll I know is that the many NATO members are not meeting their commitment.

If they are not committed, why should the US be?

Obviously, he does not. Why to Trump's ardent supporters revel in their ignorance? It is well and truly bizarre.

partially agree there, but pissing off your NATO allies is not the way to go about such business, negotiating behind closed doors is how these things gets done.

Let me be the first to say that NATO is not in place to protect the territorial sovereignty of the US, and rather is in place to protect those within Europe.

The US also, unsurprisingly, has other military commitments around the world. Our allies in Europe need to and must recognize that.

For the past eight years, the US has essentially sold out its allies in the western Pacific. Ignoring China's and North Korea's aggression has reduced US credibility - as much as Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
