Thibodeau wants to win now to keep his job even if that means sacrificing the future some. He doesnt care about 5 years from now because that doesn't effect him as he could be fired before then.

The Rockets deal sets them up very well for future flexibility in terms of picks AND cap space as they're sending expiring deals. But that doesnt help Tom in the immediate.

This is why you dont make your HC the GM.

Agreed, but is that guy always involved enough to veto? I imagine some owners default to the GMs on account of their expertise.

Pretty sure it's about jimmy butler ;)

I think the details being leaked are good for the rockets . There is widespread agreement that 4 firsts is a good deal .

Thibs might not make any deal that doesn't make the team immediately better/comparable .... and that's not going to happen when you are giving up a top 15 player ( at least it's very rare lol )

Hopefully the owner is pressured into pulling the trigger by the 31st

The "all in" picks package clearly looks like good eye candy for the Wolves owner. Morey waving those shiny picks in front of his face.

It DOES indicate that there isn't a rush to trade, and that if Butler is playing well there, and helping them win...the incentive to trade isn't going to be that great. As time passes, the desire to get something may come into play...but at that point, it could be someone besides Butler they are wanted to trade.

It seems worth bearing in mind that this wasn't being driven by Thibs in the first place...it was being driven by Butler. But Thibs is the one who has to pull the trigger, and he isn't going to do that unless he sees it being in his best interest.

    Agreed .

Also , in typical Morey fashion , this is the "variance" package . Those picks could turn out to be fantastic , or (even if they are good) you could still draft crap with them . They could be high 20's and you could draft a steal.

Like many others have said , it's not even who you draft with the picks , it's what else you can do with them . Most GM's would take this deal and run with it for a soon to be UFA . But most GM's are also not the coach lol .

Hopefully the owner steps in .

If Wolves want a win-now offer from Houston, then there is no deal to be had because Houston can't compete with Golden State while giving up competent rotational players + picks.

I also highly doubt the 4 first rounders being offered have lax protections. If we're in the business of mortgaging our future away, it's not like Jimmy Butler is the only guy who can help the roster. Plenty of other teams with coaches that aren't GMs.

The first rounders HAVE to have lax protection because otherwise there is a chance they don't convey ... which would be a violation of the rule .

Other teams don't have stars as good as jimmy butler that want out and fit the rockets
