Texans are a joke...how the hell are we signing anyone to anything, we don’t even have a GM!

I don’t trust Bill, Cal, or anyone in the organization to get within 10 feet of a contract. Pitiful.

The Texans reportedly won’t be signing linebacker Jadeveon Clowney to a long-term deal before Monday’s deadline for agreeing to terms on a multi-year contract with franchise tagged players. And there’s a good reason for that.

Per a league source, former G.M. Brian Gaine and current head coach Bill O’Brien disagreed on whether to make a long-term commitment to the first overall pick in the 2014 draft. With Gaine now gone, O’Brien’s preferred approach prevails.

The first player selected during O’Brien’s tenure in Houston (yes, it really has been that long), Clowney has completed his four-year rookie deal and his fifth-year option. The Texans have chosen to keep him for one more year under the franchise tag, at a tender of $15.967 million.

Next year, if the Texans tag Clowney again, his one-year salary will increase by 20 percent, to $19.16 million. Absent a long-term deal or a second tag, Clowney will become a free agent.

For now, Clowney remains caught in the downside to the rookie wage scale. Adopted in order to prevent high-profile busts from receiving money they never earn, the system that arrived in 2011 also allows teams to squat on high-level picks who pan out, keeping their major payday away from them for six or seven years.

Regardless, that’s the rule — and O’Brien wanted to proceed this way. With no G.M. in place, O’Brien clearly is calling the shots on this one.

So it was O’Brien who didn’t want to resign clowney. Texans giving O’Brien this much influence he better be in a AFC title game this season if not he should be gone before we hire a new GM. I hope that’s what the Texans are waiting on to see how this season goes that way you can get a coach and GM all at once

Well now that this has leaked there's no way Clowney signs a long term deal ever, knowing that his own coach doesn't want him.

We need to look to trade him for something.

Regardless we aren't going to compete for a Superbowl birth this year so I'm in favor of O'Brien getting fired for his incompetence.

I HATE the fact that BOB is wielding this much influence. The dude is a joke and no idea why Cal thinks he has earned this status by being absolutely mediocre every season and with an arrogant attitude on top of that.

However, in this case perhaps he knows more about JD and his knee or effort and is smart not to sign him long term.

Wouldn't Gaine have the same medical knowledge?

First off, the Texans have obviously become a joke and it will be up to ownership to fix the mess. As to Clowney, while I am no fan of O’Brien and think we need a new coach to successfully move forward, I’m glad he had the sense to not get the Texans saddled with a massive long-term contract for him. Clowney has shown that he can be a playmaker, but he has been too inconsistent, prone to making boneheaded plays (penalties at the most inopportune times, even when he’s on the sideline), and clearly has a history with injuries. I’m fine with a one year franchise tag at this point but that’s it.

Two "Once in a generation defensive talents" that we've wasted a #1 pick on.

    This franchise sucks at times.

This will make 2 times the Texans take a DE #1 overall and neither one will have made it to their second contract before we let them walk.

I really don't see what the big deal is. Franchise him and then franchise him again next year, etc.

What's the point? We'll see an even more lazier version of Clowney at that point.
