Interesting article about Derek Boogaard one of the toughest enforcers in the NHL who is now playing for the Minnesota Wild and also played for the Houston Aeros. Its a long article so I'm only posting the first paragraph but check out the link. There's some good pics and info about fighting in the NHL at the link. http://citypages.com/databank/28/1373/article15269.asp From the Minneapolis-St. Paul City Pages. They talk about the Boogeyman as if he were another species. At six-foot, seven-inches tall—add three inches in skates—the Wild left winger stands a head above most NHL players (one writer describes him as "yeti-like"). Weighing 250 pounds, he has a gorilla's arms and hands the size of concrete blocks. They're always thrown with bad intentions.
You know he's only a tough guy because people made fun of his last name when he was growing up. A bit too much like booger. I haven't watched hockey in many years, but it is truely the only sport where you can have absolutely no skill or talent but be on the team because you can beat the crap out of people. And many teams actually have a whole line of guys who are like that. I actually used to love Bob Probert. Not only was the guy a total punk, but his team had to plan to play without him when they went to Canada because his multiple arrests for assualting police officers and posession of cocaine prevented him from traveling there. Nice. When I was in middle school there was a rail-thin 6'6" defenseman on my school's hockey team. That was truely a strange sight. I kept waiting for him to tip over.
In the article it says that his dad was a Royal Canadian Mountie and so they travelled a lot. Being the new kid in town and the son of a cop he got a lot of crap.
Even though I live in MN not really. I don't mind watching it during the playoffs but the only team I could name more than one player on is the Wild.
